Fort Eugor Score

At the mouth of the Scab river, high on a promontory, sits Fort Eugor ("YOU-gore"). It was a fully functional military fort a few hundred years ago, but is abandoned these days. They say it is haunted, which might explain why that area of town has not been developed and built upon. Or maybe it is because, when the tide is low, the mud-flats below just stink.

Priestess Rita [Ian] had a date with Anton Chung, the Corporal of the Night Watch of the Scabport Spite gate. This was to be at the Millpond Inn, the poshest inn of Scabport [blue dot near top of map], and this date was tonight.

Rita's vice was luxury, so she had no shortage of gowns and shoes and accouterments. She spent the afternoon dolling herself up. The high-fashion REAL formal robes were an exquisite mix of brocade, lace, satin and samite, with a lace-edged decolletage, in whites, ivories and pale blue.

Sorrow [Jeff] took the shallop, and ferried Rita and chaperone Argile [Richard], up the Scab river to the millpond. The river was quite navigable for low-masted water-craft; the Smoking Loon had special quick-release masts that could be laid down so the boat could fit under the six bridges they would need to negotiate in this trip.

Anton Chung was waiting at the Millpond Inn, and he greeted Rita with a peck on both cheeks, then seated her. Argile sat nearby at the bodyguards' table with Anton's two men.

The meal was a ten course degustation menu with wines to match, and must have cost a bomb.
But then, rumour has it, that Scabport Knives were well paid.

The body-guards got cabbage soup; but it wasn't too bad, having pieces of scab in it - the "scab" being the famous Scabport anemic asparagus. Quite delicious, in fact.

Anton was the perfect gentleman. During the meal, he even proposed to Rita - to meet tomorrow, at one bell, with a job offer for the Budgie Smugglers.

The date ended with a promise of another one.

After they had returned home, well after dark, Sonny Bowens (Bronze Studs), contacted the group. Priestess Clara of the IMAG temple wanted to meet.

So, Sorrow, El Cid [Shane] and Ronny [Deacon] went to the temple. Clara was there, in her dark sphere, with a couple of IMAG guards. She was disappointed with them for helping the REALs the other day. Nevertheless, she had a job for them: "To prove their loyalty and faithfulness". It was to extinguish the light at the top of the main Scabport lighthouse, in the centre of the Scab river [circled tower, centre bottom]. Sorrow said they would think about it and return tomorrow night with an answer.

The next morning, Rita reported in to her REAL temple, as per normal, and she was summoned to Priestess Colleen Sanford's room. Colleen had some information for her.

"It seems your group has been compromised by the IMAGs. Do you know anything about this?

"I can not believe it, " said Rita, horrified.

"We think some of your group are aiding the IMAGs both tacitly, and indirectly. Passing information, et cetera."

"I know nothing of this," said Rita. "I will make enquiries."

"Also," said Colleen. "You know how you shifted your secret lair recently?"

"Of course,"

"Well, did you know, at the location of your former base, there is now an IMAG shrine, in the very place you used to sleep?!"

Rita had been asleep marmalading during this whole sorry episode, so she didn't know. If her jaw could have fallen any lower, it would have broken the tiles.

Causeway Lighthouse
While Rita was at the temple, the rest of the group went out in the shallop to reconnoiter the lighthouse and the causeway. The causeway diverted the main flow of the Scab river. This kept the shipping channels deeper and allowed larger ships to dock at the main docks. On the seaward side of the causeway, there were mudflats that were exposed at low tide.

The lighthouse had a bright Continual Light beam on top, which shone for tens of leagues out to sea. Extinguishing it would cause a major navigation hazard.  The tower was guarded by troops from the Knives. It was accessible from boat - there was a jetty at the base, and by a walking track along the boulders of the causeway.

It would be a tricky score, and the group began to wonder why the IMAGs wanted this out.

Rita and the group met up with Chung again an hour before dark. He, too, had a job for the group.

Fort Eugor
Abandoned Fort Eugor, atop the hill by the causeway, had become a source of dispute between the Knives and the TGP (Thieves' Guild Police). The two groups had an agreement that neither group would place troops in the fort, but Chung had seen reports that the TGP were doing just this. But he needed proof, and he could not send his own men up there (if he was wrong, then the TGP could claim the Knives broke the agreement). He would pay 8 COIN for this job.

That evening, Sorrow, El Cid and Ronny ventured to back to the IMAG temple and to meet with Priestess Clara, to tell he they would not do the Lighthouse job. She was not very pleased.

The next day, Huilam [Jamie], Burrito [Darryl], Moonlight [Chris] and Attlee [Kevin] checked around the base of the Fort Eugor. There was a road up the hill and the walled fort sat atop. The walls were crumbling and holed, and the gates were long-broken, so entry was not a problem.

Using his Consort action, Huilam charmed Lady Florence of the Falshot family, who lived near the fort road. She was happy to let the group camp some of their number on her land, so as to watch the fort.

Night One

That night, El Cid and Sorrow went up to reconnoitre the fort. There were a few slack non-attentive guards wandering around, which they bypassed with ease. In the courtyard of the fort were some ruined stables and out-buildings, a well, and the three-storied keep itself. The keep stonework was still quite intact. And it had recent work done to it: new doors, new shuttered windows, and a new roof.

Sorrow had his IMAG gifted Dark-eyes and El Cid had his Dark-fists. Both Sorrow's eyes and El
Cid's fists tingled and throbbed when they passed the well. They decided to leave the investigation of that phenomenon for another time.

The keep's ground-floor shutters looked rather sturdy so Sorrow climbed up the side. The second storey had no rooms yet, just yawning open windows, but there was a floor on the third storey. So he climbed up there. El Cid was helped up with ropes. There were some rooms of interest, but they deliberately decided not to touch anything at this stage. There was a locked room, an office type room. Stairs had not been constructed - there was a ladder down a shaft to give access to the floors. They left.

The next day, Ronny, Burrito and Attlee followed a wagon (that had left the keep) into the streets of Scabport. Sure enough, this wagon went straight to the compound of the TGP.

The group took the info the Anton Chung that night. But he wanted proof and evidence. Not just hearsay.

So, they would return...

  1. Chung is wrong. What the Budgie Smugglers saw is TESTIMONY, not hearsay. Even if they get physical evidence, it will only be as strong as their own credibility. Unless there is a some kind of unforgeable photography spell?

  2. Chung wants hard evidence. So testimony is not good enough.

  3. I can see where this is heading. "We can't risk open war with the TG. So the Budgie Smugglers must break in, smash up the construction work and not get caught. The TG can't openly complain because they're not supposed to be there."
