Arrival at Vilis

Two of our party were suffering from the marmalade malady - Stella Cauthon and Hoff Ende lay slumped in their bunks, small quantities of marmalade dribbling from their mouths as they remained locked in that peculiar unconscious state. We'd learned by now that moving them for short, potentially dangerous missions was more trouble than it was worth. They'd stay aboard The Cauthon while the rest of us handled business.

The Vilis Highport

The Cauthon glided into dock at Vilis Prime's Highport, the massive orbital space station that serviced the most populous world in the subsector. Eight billion souls lived on the planet below, with another two and a half billion scattered across the system's six other worlds. It was a major hub of the Third Imperium, and the military presence made that abundantly clear.

As we completed our docking procedures, Crash noted the sheer number of warships in orbit. "That's a lot of firepower," he muttered, counting destroyers, cruisers, and what looked like at least one dreadnought.

The customs inspection was thorough and tense. A squad of Imperium troops boarded, their leader a hard-faced sergeant who wasted no time.

"Any Zhodani aboard?" he barked.

"No," Crash replied. "We dropped our navigator off at Winston."

The sergeant's eyes narrowed. "Winston. That's Zhodani territory now."

"We're aware," Itzy said carefully. "Some of us have family there."

The inspection continued, the troops checking every compartment with professional efficiency. The tension in the air was palpable - clearly the Third Imperium wasn't taking the Zhodani annexation of Winston lightly.

"You're clear to proceed," the sergeant finally said. "But be advised - no weapons are permitted on the surface. Leave them aboard your ship. Admiral Ramsbottom's orders."

"Admiral Ramsbottom?" Anton asked after the troops had left. "Never heard of him."

"Must be the local fleet commander," Spanner suggested. "And he's not taking any chances."

Descent to Vilnius

We opted for the Sky Elevator rather than the shuttle service - a gondola-style capsule that ran on fixed cables between the Highport and the Lowport on the surface. The descent took nearly an hour, the planet growing larger in the viewports as we dropped through the upper atmosphere.

Vilnius spread out below us, a gleaming metropolis of towering structures and mag-train lines that crisscrossed the cityscape like silver threads. The Lowport was a bustling hub of activity, and we quickly caught a mag-train to our first destination.

The local Cauthon Institute was a modest facility compared to some we'd seen, but well-maintained and clearly active. The director, a thin man with wild grey hair who introduced himself as Dr Strangelove, greeted us with professional courtesy.

"Ah yes, the traveling Institute representatives," he said, his voice carrying a faint accent. "I've been apprised of your mission. You'll want the main research hospital in Vilnius - Dr Knodel is expecting you."

Our Dr Knodel's head snapped up. "Knodel? A relation, perhaps?"

"I couldn't say," Dr Strangelove replied. "But he's head of Genetic Medicines. Very accomplished."

The monorail train carried us across the city to the research hospital, a massive complex of interconnected towers that gleamed white against the sky. We entered through the main reception and asked for Dr Knodel.

When he arrived, the family resemblance was unmistakable.

"Brother!" both Knodels shouted simultaneously, rushing toward each other.

"Powidła!" exclaimed Paczki (paw-VEED-wah).

"Paczki!" responded Powidła (POUNCH-key).

They embraced enthusiastically, launching into rapid conversation in what sounded like German mixed with technical jargon.

"Well," Crash said to the rest of us, "at least someone's having a good reunion."

Quarantine

Powidła Knodel - head of Genetic Medicines and apparently Paczki's brother - led us deeper into the hospital complex. As we passed through a set of heavy doors into the genetic research wing, a klaxon suddenly blared throughout the corridor.

Massive airtight doors crashed down behind us with a resounding boom.

"Ah, the alien bio-indicator alarm," Powidła noted calmly, as if this happened every day. "I suspected that might trigger."

"You suspected?" Buzz said, looking at the sealed doors behind us.

"Of course. You've been exposed to extraterrestrial biological agents. The sensors are quite sensitive."

We were ushered into a bio-hazard quarantine chamber - a large, sterile white room with examination tables, medical equipment, and what looked like observation windows along one wall. Powidła and Paczki immediately began discussing theories about alien biology and genetic mutations, their conversation growing increasingly technical and incomprehensible to the rest of us.

Blood samples were taken from everyone. Then we waited.

Several hours later, Powidła scanned the results, his expression grave.

"As expected," he said, pulling up holographic displays of our genetic profiles. "Itzy, Sang, and Anton - you three show severe genetic infection. Your DNA has been fundamentally altered by exposure to the extraterrestrial biology on this 'Rose' planet."

He gestured to the rest of us. "The remainder of the party shows minor carrier status - genetic infection prions that haven't fully integrated into your systems. Concerning, but not immediately dangerous."

"Interesting timing," Powidła continued, swiping through additional files. "We actually have other patients here who survived exposure to the same planet. A Sergeant Benjamin Gunn and his companions were transferred here some weeks ago."

"Ben's here?" Anton said, surprised. "And the Zhodani girls? Fido?"

"Indeed. I've been conducting research on their conditions. Fascinating cases." Powidła pulled up another set of displays. "The Zhodani females show no genetic infection whatsoever - their physiology appears resistant. However, their higher brain functions have been severely degraded by some other mechanism we don't yet understand."

"And Ben?" Itzy asked.

"Mr. Gunn is... extensively mutated. But stable, for now. The Vargr specimen - 'Fido' as you call him - has undergone significant devolution. More wolf than sophont at this point."

Powidła turned his attention to Anton. "You exhibit the most obvious physical symptoms among your group. The mushroom growth, the formic acid secretion - these are clear indicators of advanced genetic integration with the fungal biology from Rose."

Anton shifted uncomfortably. "Can you cure it?"

"Possibly," Powidła said. "But to attempt a cure, I need to understand exactly what's happening at the molecular level. Which brings me to our cutting-edge treatment option."

The treatment room
He gestured to a bank of equipment along one wall - sleek medical devices connected to what looked like neural interface helmets.

"Nano-bot medical examination," Powidła explained. "Controlled via neural interface technology. Essentially, your party will pilot a fleet of medical nano-bots through Anton's body, allowing us to examine the genetic infection at the DNA level in real-time."

"Like that old movie," Heidi said excitedly. "Fantastic Voyage! From ancient Earth!"

"Precisely that concept, yes," Powidła confirmed. "Though our technology is considerably more advanced. You'll maintain full consciousness while controlling the nano-bots, experiencing the journey as if you were actually shrunk down and traveling through the body."

"Cool!" Heidi exclaimed.

Anton looked less enthusiastic. "So, you're going to shrink my friends and inject them into my body?"

"Not literally shrink them, no," Powidła clarified. "They'll remain here, controlling the nano-bots through neural interface. But their perspective will be as if they were inside the nano-bot fleet."

"Where exactly are we going?" Spanner asked, always practical.

Powidła consulted his notes. "First destination: the prostate gland. That's where we're detecting unusual cellular activity. Second destination: the scrotum, where the primary fungal growth is located."

Anton sighed. "Of course it's my groin. Why is it always my groin?"

Paczki rubbed his hands together eagerly. "Fascinating! A journey into zee very heart of zee infection! But there is a risk, ya?"

"Vell ya, the neural link means that any injury to your bot means an injury to the 'pilot'. So don't be killing your bot, that would be very unfortunate for you!"

"Oh great" muttered Crash, "Just like flying!"

The Journey Begins

After further discussion and detailed instructions from Powidła, we were led to a specialized treatment room. Seven medical 'beds' were arranged in a semicircle, each equipped with the neural interface helmets.

"Everyone comfortable?" Powidła asked as we settled onto the beds.

"Define comfortable," Crash muttered, eyeing the neural interface helmet with suspicion.

"The helmets will create a direct neural link to the nano-bot fleet," Powidła explained as he and his assistants fitted them to our heads. "You'll experience full sensory input from the nano-bots' perspective. Movement, vision, even limited tactile feedback."

"And Anton?" Itzy asked.

"Mr. Tositova will of course be joining you for his own exploration. Ve wouldn't vant him to be missing out on the excitement, no?"

"Wait, I'll be inside myself? That's not weird at all" muttered Anton.

"The nano-bot fleet will be loaded into a micro-sized capsule and introduced via catheter through the urethra," continued Powidła matter-of-factly.

There was a moment of stunned silence.

"Through my... wait, what?" Anton's voice went up an octave.

"Down the shaft of your fungal penis, to be specific," Powidła clarified, as if discussing the weather. "It's the most direct route to both the prostate and scrotum."

"Of course it is," Anton said weakly, his face pale.

The neural interfaces activated with a soft hum. For a moment, nothing happened. Then—

The world shifted.

Suddenly we weren't in the treatment room anymore. We were... somewhere else. Somewhere dark and confined, surrounded by smooth walls that pulsed with a steady rhythm.

"Neural link established," Powidła's voice echoed around us, seemingly coming from everywhere and nowhere. "You are now controlling the nano-bot fleet. Preparing for insertion."

There was a sensation of movement, of being pushed forward through an impossibly tight space. The walls pressed in around us, smooth and pink, pulsing with regular contractions.

"Insertion complete," Powidła announced. "Welcome to Anton's urethra. Your journey begins now."

Paczki's voice came through the neural link, filled with scientific enthusiasm: "In ve go!"

The passage ahead stretched before us like a vast tunnel, twisting into the distance.

The voyage into Anton had begun.

Into the Depths

The insertion experience was profoundly disturbing. Even knowing intellectually that we weren't actually being shrunk and injected into Anton's body didn't prevent the visceral horror of the experience. The neural interface made it feel utterly real - especially the claustrophobic journey down the urethra.

Each of us had to make a roll against our PSYCHE score to handle the trauma. Most managed to keep their composure, but Crash rolled catastrophically - a natural 20 that sent his nano-bot careening wildly, sustaining four points of damage in the process. Itzy and Buzz also struggled, each taking a point of damage as their bots collided with the urethral walls.

"I'm damaged already?" Crash groaned. "We just got in here!"

Heidi immediately went into medic mode, using her First Aid skills through the nano-bot interface. She successfully stabilized Crash and Itzy, repairing one point of damage to each, but couldn't quite manage Buzz's wounds.

"At least we're functional," she said.

As we oriented ourselves in this strange new environment, we discovered our nano-bots were equipped with weapons systems tailored to each pilot's primary attributes. Those with high Dexterity or Perception had missile weapons - sleek projectile systems that could target from a distance. Those with high Strength or Constitution wielded bladed weapons - molecular-edged cutting tools.

The split was roughly even: four missile weapons, three bladed.

Buzz activated his blade and swung it experimentally, the weapon humming as it sliced through the surrounding fluid. He laughed with delight.

"Cut!" he exclaimed, clearly pleased with his weapon.

"Very appropriate," Spanner muttered.

Navigation Between Cells

Our capsule proceeded forward through the urethral passage, the walls pulsing rhythmically around us. Eventually, the passage narrowed and if we proceeded on the capsule would soon become jammed. "Capsule can proceed no further," Powidła's voice crackled through the neural link. "Exit and continue on foot." The capsule's walls dilated, and we stepped out into the urethral passage. "Keep moving," Powidła instructed. "You need to enter the intercellular environment surrounding Anton's prostate. Look for a gash in the urethral passage wall - a natural passage. You should see one approximately one hundred meters ahead." We pushed forward through the viscous fluids, navigating along the twisting urethral passage. "There," Spanner pointed. "I see it." A gash in one of the walls - a tear or opening in the membrane that would allow us passage through. "That's normal?" Anton's voice came through the comms, worried. "Absolutely normal," Powidła assured him. "Your bodies systems have natural passages and connections. No cause for alarm. This will allow your team to enter the prostate area." We approached the gash carefully and slipped through into ... .. something we hadn't expected. We emerged into a vast space - the intercellular environment surrounding Anton's prostate. The scale was disorienting - we knew intellectually we were nano-sized, but the environment felt enormous. We were floating in the enormous space between cells. Each cell was massive - easily the size of a stadium - their walls forming vast curved surfaces around us. The intercellular fluid was thick but navigable, and we found we could move through it with a swimming motion, though Powidła had apparently forgotten to mention we'd need zero-G skills for this! "This is so weird," Heidi said, staring at the immense cellular structures around us. "We're like... between buildings in a city."

The inter-cellular space

We pressed onward, navigating through Anton's insides for what felt like an hour. The environment was surreal - vast cell chambers connected by open space; all bathed in a reddish glow from the surrounding tissue. Finally, we arrived at the boundary wall of what Powidła identified as the appropriate prostate cell.

"See that spongy wall ahead of you?" Powidła asked. "You can cut through there into the cell. Or use the cell gate."

The Cell Gate

The cell gate was unlike anything we'd expected. A large disk-like platform mounted perpendicular to the cell wall, half inside and half outside, with a series of seat-like mounts arranged around its circumference. It rotated slowly, like some biological carousel.

The Cell 'Gate'

"Sit on a seat," Powidła instructed. "The gate will rotate and carry you through an irised opening in the cell wall." "If you're lucky," Spanner added, studying the mechanism.

She was right to be cautious. Each of us had to roll against our LUCK stat to successfully pass through. A failure meant the iris would close at the wrong moment, causing damage and leaving us stranded outside.

One by one, we took our chances.

Spanner went first - success. She spun through the iris smoothly and disappeared into the cell.

Heidi followed - success.

Buzz - success.

Crash - success, barely.

Anton - success.

Then Itzy sat down on a mount. The disk rotated, but the iris closed too early. His nano-bot slammed into the cell wall, taking two points of damage, and he remained outside.

Paczki was next. The same result - the iris caught him, inflicting one point of damage, and he too was left outside the cell wall.

"Scheisse!" Paczki cursed.

Inside the cell, Paczki quickly administered First Aid through the neural link, managing to restore one point to both himself and Itzy. But Itzy was still down two hit points.

"Now what?" Itzy asked, staring at the impenetrable cell wall.

Through the comms, we worked out a plan. Someone would need to cut through the cell wall from the inside to let them in. Crash had the best bladed attack skill, so he was selected for the task - though he had to spend a point of LUCK to ensure success.

The molecular blade hummed as it bit into the cell wall. Crash worked methodically, carving a passage large enough for the nano-bots to pass through.

"It was like cutting through a one-foot-thick curtain of lard," he commented later.

"And that's my cell," Anton grumbled over the comms.

Finally, Paczki and Itzy squeezed through the opening, and we were all inside.

The Cell Interior

The interior of the prostate cell was vast - easily the size of a cathedral, just as Powidła had described. And it wasn't empty.

"Advance toward the cell nucleus," Powidła instructed. "But be careful. The cell's defence systems may activate. Watch for p53 proteins - they act like security guards. And caspase proteins - suicide bombers that can be quite dangerous."

"Just great," Heidi muttered. "Security systems."

As we moved deeper into the cell, we spotted them. Not the spiked spheres we'd been half-expecting, but something stranger. The p53 proteins looked like small, angular constructs - almost robotic in appearance, with multiple arms that reached out to check and repair the DNA strands. They moved with purpose through the cellular fluid, patrolling.

P53 Protein and Caspace Defenders

"Don't disturb them if you can help it," Powidła warned. "They're looking for damaged DNA and foreign objects. You qualify as foreign."

We navigated carefully, timing our movements to avoid the patrolling p53 proteins. The caspase proteins were harder to spot - smaller, more numerous, waiting dormant until triggered.

After careful manoeuvring, we reached the cell nucleus without triggering the defence systems.

The Portal

The nucleus loomed before us, a massive spherical structure at the heart of the cell. And set into its wall was what Powidła called "the portal" - a relatively small circular opening, perhaps three meters across, its perimeter lined with wildly thrashing cilia that whipped back and forth like angry tentacles.

The Nucleus Portal with Thrashing Cilia

"I'm not going through there!" Paczki stated firmly, staring at the thrashing cilia.

"Wait here then," Crash replied. "No doubt we'll be back in no time. And watch out for those defences!"

The rest of us steeled ourselves and dove through the portal, one after another. Each passage required another PSYCHE roll to avoid injury from the violent cilia.

Spanner failed - the cilia caught her, inflicting one point of damage.

Itzy failed - another point of damage.

Anton failed - one point of damage.

"Damaged by my own gut," Anton grumbled.

Heidi quickly administered First Aid, successfully treating Spanner and Itzy, but unable to help Anton.

Behind us, we heard Paczki's voice: "Wait! Don't leave me here alone!"

He came diving through the portal, the cilia whipping at him as he passed, but he made his roll and emerged unscathed.

Inside the Nucleus

The interior of the cell nucleus was breathtaking in its scale. It stretched out like a covered football stadium, and everywhere we looked, massive twisted ropes of cable draped through the space in complex tangles.

Inside the DNA Forest

"The DNA," Paczki said, his scientific enthusiasm overcoming his fear.

It was fortunate he'd come through after all. He had the detector device Powidła had provided - a specialized scanner that would home in on the specific DNA strand we needed to sample. He also carried the replacement DNA strands that would hopefully repair Anton's genetic damage.

Paczki activated the detector.

"Beep... beep... beep..." it went, the frequency increasing as we moved deeper into the nucleus.

"Follow the signal," Powidła instructed. "When you find the target strand, break out a section, photograph it with the scanner, and splice it back in place."

We navigated through the forest of DNA cables, following Paczki and his beeping detector. The frequency increased steadily until we stood before one particular strand.

"This is it," Paczki confirmed.

He carefully extracted a section, photographed it with the scanner, and spliced it back into place. Then we waited while Powidła analysed the results.

Several minutes passed before his voice crackled through the comms.

"Ya, the gene sequence is totally wrong, as I suspected."

"What now?" Anton asked.

"Take the replacement DNA strand I provided and replace that section you just sampled," Powidła instructed. "Then follow the detector to the second site and splice in the 'replicator' strand."

There was a pause, then: "Then run. You must exit the nucleus very pronto because bad shit will quickly go down!"

"I not like 'shit' dis close," Paczki grumbled, but he set to work.

The first splice went smoothly. Then the detector led us to a second location, where Paczki carefully inserted the replicator strand.

The moment it was absorbed into the DNA rope, strange swishing noises began echoing through the nucleus chamber. The DNA strands around us started to writhe and pulse.

"Now run!" Paczki screamed.

The Escape

We raced back toward the cilium portal, diving through without hesitation. This time, everyone made their PSYCHE rolls - fear was an excellent motivator. We emerged back into the main cell chamber and sprinted toward the outer cell wall.

The gate would be tricky to navigate while under time pressure, but we had a plan. Crash went first, successfully spinning through on the rotating disk. Once outside, he immediately began cutting another hole through the cell wall with his molecular blade.

One out, six still inside.

And then the cell's defence systems activated.

Two p53 proteins came gliding toward us with alarming speed, their multiple arms extended, ready to grab and neutralize the foreign objects they'd detected. Behind them, we could see caspase proteins beginning to activate - small explosive packages that would sacrifice themselves to destroy intruders.

Itzy and Paczki spun up their missile systems and fired. Both shots found their marks, and the p53 proteins shattered in bursts of cellular material.

Spanner slipped through Crash's cut in the wall. Anton tried the gate disk and succeeded, spinning through to safety.

Three out, four still inside.

Buzz dove through the cut next, but the others hesitated at the unpredictable gate disk.

Another wave of p53 proteins advanced, with caspase proteins clustering behind them. Itzy fired again, taking out a p53 before it could reach them, then dove through the cut in the wall.

The caspase proteins detonated near Heidi and Paczki - small but powerful explosions designed to rupture foreign objects. Heidi dodged successfully, but Paczki took a direct hit - six points of damage that sent his nano-bot reeling.

"Gah!" he cried out in pain.

He staggered through the cut in the wall, and Heidi followed immediately after, more caspase proteins detonating just centimetres behind her.

"Why was I the last?" Paczki complained, his nano-bot's systems flickering. "Now we leave immediately!"

He turned and headed back toward the capsule location.

"No, brother," Powidła's voice came through the comms. "You must complete the second part of the mission at the scrotum, or all will be in vain."

"And now you must also watch for prion spores. They may be thick in the scrotum area."

Heidi administered successful First Aid to Paczki's wounds, restoring some of his damaged systems. He reluctantly agreed to continue.

"Fine," he muttered. "But if I die in Anton's balls, I vill never forgive any of you."

Deeper Still

The party moved on, navigating through the intercellular space. We floated and swam through the viscous fluid between the stadium-sized cells, heading deeper into Anton's body toward the scrotum and the source of the fungal infection.

The environment was growing stranger. The cells we passed showed signs of infection - patches of purple and grey discoloration on their walls, clear evidence of the alien fungal biology that had infected Anton on Planet Rose.

And in the fluid around us, we began to see them: tiny spores drifting like dust motes, each one a potential threat.

The prions Powidła had warned us about.

We navigated carefully, following Powidła's directions through the maze of cells towards the scrotum near the base of Anton's fungal growth.

The second phase of our mission was about to begin.

The Discovery

We floated through the intercellular space, the massive cells surrounding us like buildings in a city. Anton, controlling his nano-bot while simultaneously experiencing the journey through the neural link, peered with morbid fascination at his own cellular architecture.

Then he spotted something odd. Something that didn't belong.

The Microscopic Portal Discovery

A small circular disk was embedded in the wall of one of the cells, its mirror-like surface twinkling with a faint rose-coloured glow.

"That looks like one of those portal things," he thought aloud, pointing it out to the others.

We moved closer to examine it. The disk was perhaps two meters across at this scale - microscopic in the real world, but clearly visible to our nano-bots. And it did indeed appear to be an Ancients' portal, identical in design to the larger ones we'd encountered, just impossibly small.

"Holy crap," Anton exclaimed. "Can't we escape that terrible place and its Ancient mysteries? Even at the cellular level?"

"Can we cut it loose?" Spanner asked, her engineer's mind already working on the problem.

We did exactly that. Crash's molecular blade carefully severed the portal from the cell wall. Remarkably, the disk maintained its vertical orientation even when freed, floating in the cellular fluid. It could be spun about its central vertical axis like a pinned mirror.

Its properties appeared identical to the larger one-way portals we were familiar with. Items could pass from our side through to... wherever the other side opened. Nothing apparent had come through from the other side except that faint, ominous rose-coloured glow.

"Watch out!" Crash yelled suddenly. "Four p53 proteins approaching!"

We spun around. Through the intercellular space, four of the angular security constructs were gliding toward us with alarming speed - drawn by our presence and the disruption we'd caused cutting the portal free.

Heidi screamed. The missile fighters - Itzy, Paczki, Crash, and Anton - powered up their weapons. The blade wielders - Spanner, Buzz, and Heidi - prepared for close combat.

But Spanner had another idea.

"Wait!" she called. "Stand down!"

She grabbed the portal and spun it so its mirror surface faced the approaching p53 proteins. With only small adjustments to the disk's position, she lined it up perfectly.

Using the Portal as a Shield

The first p53 protein struck the portal's surface and slid silently through, disappearing without resistance. Then the second. The third. The fourth. All gone, sent to whatever destination the portal connected to.

"Nice one," Crash praised.

"Let's keep it," Spanner said, gripping the portal firmly. "This could be useful."

The Gauntlet

We continued through the intercellular space toward the scrotum, Spanner carrying the portal at our front, its mirror surface facing forward like a shield. Each time cellular defences approached - p53 proteins or clusters of caspase proteins - we simply let them slide through to their unknown fate.

Six more p53 proteins. Then eight. Then twelve caspase proteins clustering together. Four more p53s. Six. A final wave of eight mixed defenders.

By the time we arrived at the appropriate scrotum cell and found the gate to enter through, we'd sent dozens of Anton's cellular defences through the microscopic portal to Planet Rose - or wherever it connected.

"Enter here," Powidła's voice instructed.

We positioned the portal carefully, attaching it nominally to the cell wall just near the gate mechanism. Then we had to decide on our entry strategy.

"Missile wielders should try the gate first," Spanner suggested. "Leave the sword wielders to cut through if necessary."

It made sense. Crash, Itzy, Paczki, and Anton approached the rotating disk gate and took their seats. Each had to roll against their LUCK stat.

Crash - success.

Itzy - success.

Paczki - success.

Anton - success.

"Huh," Buzz said. "Maybe our luck's turning."

The blade wielders followed. Spanner, Buzz, Heidi.

All successful.

We were all inside the cell with no damage inflicted.

"Piece of piss," Anton chuckled as we moved deeper into the cell, searching for the nucleus.

The Final Splice

We found the cilia-surrounded nucleus portal quickly and prepared to dive through. One by one, we made the attempt.

Crash went first - clean passage.

Itzy followed - he had to spend a point of LUCK, but made it through.

Spanner - success.

Paczki - success.

Buzz - success.

Anton - failed his PSYCHE roll, taking one point of damage from the thrashing cilia.

Heidi - also failed, one point of damage.

"Ow," Anton muttered. "My own body hates me."

Heidi quickly administered First Aid, successfully healing all of the wounded - Anton, and herself.

Inside the nucleus, Paczki activated his detector device. The familiar beeping led us through the forest of DNA strands to our target location.

"Here," Paczki announced, examining the twisted rope of genetic material.

He carefully spliced in the replacement section, his hands steady despite the pressure. Then the detector led us to the second site, where he inserted the replicator instruction.

The moment it was absorbed into the DNA strand, the familiar swishing sounds began echoing through the nucleus.

"Run!" Paczki yelled.

"Run?" Buzz muttered to himself. "More like swim rapidly through thick jelly without arms!"

But we all moved as fast as our nano-bots could manage, racing back toward the nucleus portal.

Narrow Escape

We dove through the cilia portal with practiced efficiency this time. Everyone made their rolls - fear and experience were definitely excellent teachers. We emerged into the main cell chamber and rushed toward the outer cell wall and the gate.

Paczki reached the rotating disk first. He sat down on a mount, the disk began to rotate, and—

The iris closed at exactly the wrong moment. He was thrown backward, tumbling several meters into the cell.

"Scheisse!" he cursed, scrambling to his feet.

Everyone else attempted the gate.

Crash - success.

Itzy - success.

Buzz - success.

Anton - success.

Heidi - success.

Spanner - failed. The iris caught her, and she remained inside the cell.

Paczki drew his molecular blade and began cutting through the cell wall from the inside. Behind him, he could sense the cell's defence systems activating - p53 proteins gliding toward them, caspase proteins beginning to cluster.

He completed the cut and dove through just as the first p53 protein arrived. Spanner ducked and dodged as a caspase protein detonated nearby, the small explosion missing her by centimetres.

Then she slipped through the cut to join the others, just as more cellular defences clustered aggressively around the torn cell wall.

The Long Journey Home

Collecting our mini-portal, we began the long journey back to the capsule. It was a two-hour trip through Anton's body, navigating the intercellular spaces, floating and swimming through the viscous fluid between the massive cells.

A party LUCK roll determined whether we'd face any more cellular defence attacks during our exit. We rolled well - the journey was mercifully uneventful. Though we kept the portal ready at all times, just in case.

When we finally arrived at the capsule location in the urethral passage, we found a problem.

The capsule was destroyed.

It had been attacked and essentially dissolved by Anton's immune system - ripped apart and reduced to scattered fragments of foreign material.

"That's good, right?" Anton figured. "Means my immune system is working?"

"Good for you," Crash said. "Bad for us."

We stood there for a moment, contemplating our situation, when Powidła's voice crackled through the neural link.

"I see the problem. Injecting a second capsule now."

Moments later, a pressure wave rushed through the urethral passage - a massive surge of fluid that threatened to sweep us all away. Everyone grabbed for handholds on the passage walls, making desperate LUCK rolls to maintain their grip.

Heidi failed. She was swept backward up the passage, tumbling helplessly in the current.

"Heidi!" someone yelled.

We quickly organized. Spanner and Paczki stayed on guard at the new capsule with the portal, while the rest of us chased after Heidi on a recovery mission.

It took nearly twenty minutes of careful navigation through the urethral passage, but we managed to locate her wedged against a cellular structure several hundred meters back. She was shaken but unharmed.

"Thanks," she gasped as we pulled her free. "That was terrifying."

We returned safely to the capsule location, where Spanner and Paczki were waiting. The portal was carefully loaded into the new capsule first, then we all crowded into the cabin.

"Everyone in?" Paczki confirmed.

"Let's get out of here," Anton said fervently.

The Capsule Returns

With a thrum and a whoosh, the capsule began its journey out of Anton's body, back up through the urethra. The return trip was a blur of movement and sensation, and then—

Awakening

The next thing we knew, we were waking on the quarantine tables. The neural interface helmets were being removed, leaving us with throbbing headaches and disorientation. Our memories of the journey seemed almost dreamlike - had it really happened?

"Indeed" Powidła stated, noting our confused expressions. "The whole journey has of course been recorded. You are all pioneers of genetic research now. This data will be invaluable."

The microscopic portal was carefully recovered from the capsule and placed in a specialized containment unit for further research. Powidła's eyes gleamed with scientific excitement as he examined it.

"Fascinating," he murmured. "An Ancients' portal at the cellular level. The implications are... extraordinary. If they created portals at every scale, from planetary to microscopic..."

He trailed off, already lost in scientific speculation.

Over the following days, Anton experienced slowly reducing pain as his repaired DNA corrected his genetic infection. The mushroom growth in his groin began to shrink, and the formic acid secretion decreased. He wasn't completely back to normal - some changes appeared permanent - but he was significantly improved.

"No more pissing acid," he announced happily. "That's a win."

Powidła administered a prion "flushing" treatment to all of us - a specialized medication that successfully removed all traces of the alien prions from our systems.

Well, almost all of us.

Spanner and Itzy, with their altered DNA and integrated "powers," retained their infections. The prions were too deeply embedded in their genetic structure to be safely removed.

"So, Spanner," Powidła asked a few days later, approaching her in the quarantine lab. "What about you? Your transparency ability is fascinating, but the genetic infection is still progressing. Would you like us to attempt a similar nano-bot procedure?"

Spanner considered the question carefully, remembering the harrowing journey through Anton's body - the p53 security proteins, the explosive caspase defences, the agoraphobic voids between cells, the near-death experiences at the cell gates.

Then she thought about her invisibility. How it came and went unpredictably. How it was spreading, changing her at the genetic level. How she didn't fully understand or control it.

She looked at Anton, who was gingerly moving around, clearly still recovering but visibly improved.

"Let me think about it," she said finally. "That was... intense. I need some time."

Powidła nodded understandingly. "Of course. The procedure will be available whenever you're ready. And perhaps we can refine the technique based on what we learned from Anton's treatment."

"Perhaps," Spanner said noncommittally.

But privately, she was already thinking about the implications. If they could map and modify DNA at the cellular level... if they could send things through microscopic portals... what else might be possible? Could they even improve and enhance this invisibility effect?

The mission to Vilis had been meant to cure their mutations. Instead, it had opened up entirely new questions about the Ancients' technology and the nature of the infection itself.

And somewhere in a containment unit, a microscopic portal glowed with faint rose-coloured light, a tiny doorway to a nightmare world that operated at every conceivable scale.

Who Knew a Paczki was a Polish Donut
Who Knew a Paczki was a Polish Donut?

We are on Hrunting and have successfully negotiated the establishment of a further Cauthon Institute with the First Minister, Elmer Reich.

The successful template is that the local authorities purchase the land (typically 10 or so acres and near a fresh water source) and the Cauthon Institute funds the construction at a cost of usually 20 million Imperium credits or so. Stella has become adept at encouraging the local authorities to fund half or sometimes all the development based on the compelling benefits the Institute provides in terms of research, disease control, mutation analysis and some suspect weapon development of a biological nature.

Of course, Stella always manages to use the contracts to her benefit typically netting some 5% of construction costs. [She doesn’t have a 20 wealth for no reason.]

In addition to our successful negotiations, Dr Paczki Knodel has been endeavouring to perfect the anti-Zhodani spray with a working name of "Pests Away". To date this is relatively unsuccessful and smells about as poorly as Anton's formic acid urine.

An X Boat has arrived with a letter for the group.

Okay, hey sibs and pals, listen up.

Like, major fam news - you’ll wanna know - Daddy, like, totally died yesterday.

I know it's hard out, my own trip from the Cauthon Institute was bogus. But, like, hurry. Mummy pushed the funeral 'cause she wants you here. Ravens End in two weeks.

Can't say much. But it’s not the Winston you remember, you know?

That’s all.

Penny.

"Ahh not good news I'm afraid. Your father Ledge Ende has passed away. The funeral is in two weeks at Ravens End and our attendance has been requested"

Itzy forces back a tear and muses aloud "we need to see what the will contains"

We complete our arrangements on Hrunting and make ready our jump to Winston. With The Cauthon refuelled and coordinates set we jump and arrive, an uneventful week, at the star port. Contessa Ende, now Governess of Winston, greets us. We drop off the contracted navigator Natasha.

The funeral is in five days. It has been a difficult time for the Ende family over recent months. Ledge Ende (father) is now dead. Belle died in the pods on Seven. Hoff has almost continuous marmalade oozing from his orifices. Split (also known as Penny) has retired to Winston to live with her mother. Itzy – well we know about Itzy, and the last son Knob (the one sibling we haven’t met) is absent on business in far away systems.

Some of us head off to chat to Split who wrote us a letter warning of strange occurrences in Winston. It became clear that were already of those given our last visit to Winston only a few weeks ago.

A group of Zhodani explorers, associated with the Zhodani authorities also sought a meeting with us. We went to their rooms on Pennsylvania Ave, and they wasted no time getting straight to the point.

"You are experts in portal technology, and we haf found portal in Ancients' site close to Bitter End. You haf been zere before, we understand? We sent two of us through portal and zey haf not returned."

"Zay vill not return" chimes in Knodel. "Zay vill be dead now"

"We want you to come to portal and investigate what has occurred"

"What payment could we expect?" asked Stella.

"Ahhh lets talk again after the funeral" suggested Crash. "Now is not the time"

A state funeral is held for Ledge Ende, cohort of the Governess, with Zhodani dignitaries, Ende family and friends, and all manner of hangers-on looking for a free meal, in attendance. Ledge's body is taken in a closed casket to the specially constructed mausoleum dedicated to the Ende family. The formalities were followed by a well-attended and lavish function, celebrating his life.

"When will the will be read?" asked Itzy.

The following day the will is read and as anticipated all went to the Contessa. Itzy will need to bide his time.

Stella enters negotiations initially with the Zhodani but then the Contessa who of course is the Governess of Winston and therefore technically looking to employ us for this job.

Her mood was less than amicable, and she endeavours to point out that we are employed by her. Stella will have none of that and points out that we are employees of the Cauthon Institute and need funding for such endeavours.

"You are not who you say you are" Knodel accuses Stella suddenly (having bottled this up for some time).

"My dear Doctor, what do you mean?"

"Crash has done zee research and says your name is not Cauthon and that you are a con"

"You do not understand the art and depths of diplomacy my dear Doctor. It is necessary to establish different personas and deep fakes to ensure that we are effective. Certainly, don't believe all that Crash would tell you"

"You vould not lie to me?"

"Of course, not doctor" Stella responded. "When have I ever lead you astray and I can assure you mistruth is not something I trade in."

Stella of course did this with her usual smile and twinkle [17 appearance and double dice Persuasion] and Dr Knodel accepted her response, albeit reservedly.

Back to the negotiations and these are not going so well for Stella. Contessa points out that she gifted the land and the construction of the local Cauthon Institute, so this is the least that the party could do to help the Zhodanis. But Contessa is happy to supply some Zhodani arms, and we obtain a 50 Cal, bazooka, machine guns, grenades and flares.

Having obtained all they could, the Zhodani transport the party via plane to Bitter End and then by truck to the Ancients' site.

"It feels like only yesterday" Sang reminisces.

"Can you recall how to get through the passages?" asks Anton. "Cause I can't".

"Yes, of course responds Sang" and lead by the Zhodani the party descend into the Ancients' tunnels.

tunnels
Tunnels

We descend with Sang, Itzy and Anton remembering well the tunnels, until we reach the main chamber.

"What about the servitor?" asked Sang. "They will be helpful"

"It has gone quiet recently" replied the Zhodani. "We haf asked it lot of questions".

"Let's look at this portal first" suggests Anton.

The Zhodani lead them to what the party previously assumed was a garbage chute. The passage gets steeper and the Zhodani had constructed scaffolding to get down. At its base is a portal. It looks like a normal static portal and quickly we jump to the conclusion that it should be sealed off.

"You don’t vant nasty tings coming through" observes Knodel. "Vill this tunnel with concrete.

"Let's talk to the servitor first" suggests Sang.

"But we need the crown to do that – remember" states Anton.

"We could ask to borrow it?"

"Worth a try"

And so, we did and low and behold the Zhodani were prepared to at least ask their hierarchy.

A day passes and a large and somewhat formal looking group of Zhodani arrive. One, clearly the leader, presents the crown to us.

"We are watching you," she states as we glance around at the 20 or so armed Zhodani.

We go back to the main chamber and open the tunnel to where we know the servitor lives.

Sang places the crown on her head and feels a shooting pain through her body and scalp. Blood dribbles from her nose. [Sang made her Psych roll. The crown needs to adjust to a new wearer, and a failed psych roll is big trouble. Of course, Sang didn’t know this at the time.]

She calls for the servitor, and a gaunt stooped man exits the tunnel. This in no way resembles the original servitor who was strong and healthy. This one looks like it is near the end of its days.

"What has happened to you?" asks Sang

"The Zhodani have been very demanding with their questions" responds the servitor. "It tires me out."

"I will try not to drain you more," responds Sang kindly.

A lengthy discussion ensues, none of which is understood by the Zhodani or the rest of the party (Sang is speaking in the language of the Ancients)

Through the discussion we learn a lot, the key points of which are:
  • There are three types of portals
    • Garbage shoots typically to suns or desolate planets (the one here leads to a sun)
    • Static portals which all return to the Rose planet.
    • Programmable portals (with the metal ring and the 128-bit coordinate system) only located on the Rose planet
  • The Rose planet, as we know it, is called The Home Planet (of the Ancients)
  • It is located some 25,000 parsecs away from where we are, across the other side of the galaxy; we won't be travelling there any time soon!
  • The Ancients created the portals, and they enabled travel and communication throughout systems of the galaxy.
  • There a "many" fixed portals.
  • There are three Ancients sites in the Winston system (on Winston, the outer planet Dollar and Formaline, the third moon of the gas giant Lophomyrtus)
  • Winston and Dollar are observatories, but Formaline is what we attributed as a weapons / defence facility.
  • He cannot manufacture a dead organic container and pass through these portals (Dr Knodel had been endeavouring to develop a container made of chitin to achieve that very end)
  • The servitor will recover its health over time if not questioned or if a significant amount of information can be provided to it. A link to Galactipedia via the crown would achieve that.
From this information we can at least get comfort that portals are not newly being created to enable the slow occupation of the galaxies by the Spiders and Slishers. In fact, they have discovered them and trying to use them for their own means. The Ancients' technology is powerful if it can be harnessed.
Similarly, the Zhodani are endeavouring to harness the power.

(One question not answered was the rip in the galaxy that we witnessed where a large spider tail shot pods toward Formaline.)

Sang takes the crown off and fully reports back to us.

Her report to the Zhodani is less fulsome and she advises them that this portal goes to a sun and that there are three Ancients sits in the Winston system. That the servitor will recover slowly in time if not questioned.

The Zhodani seem satisfied with that, and we feel our duty has been fulfilled.

We are taken back to Ravens Ende and decide that we need to get to the advanced Tech 15 medical facility on Villis (the local largest Imperium base near here, five systems away) where Anton, Itzy and Sang's DNA morphing can be attended to. To achieve this, we first need to jump via Anselhome, where there may be an opportunity to establish another Cauthon Institute (and make more money, thinks Stella).

We successfully jump to Anselhome where there is a significant Sword-World presence. Indeed, they are interested in the establishment of a Cauthon Institute, and contracts are signed before we jump to Villis.

The trip demonstrates the need to attend to Sang and Anton. Both conditions are worsening and the DNA continues to morph. They are now dreaming about each other's condition.

We arrive in Villis without incident and again note a very heavy Imperium presence with a large fleet including a Battleship and a Dreadnought. We ready for boarding by Customs officials.

Knodel is impatient and fascinated – eager to observe his patients and their changing state. Some would say a little too fascinated. Can a scientist with a German accent and the first name of a Polish donut be trusted?

We will see.

An extract from the personal Diary of Dr Paczki Knodel Senior Medical Researcher of the Cauthon Institute.

This new assignment that I have been tasked with has been quite strange and very different from those of my past ten years. My companions are extremely different from the highly qualified fellows that I have had the privilege to have worked with in the past, and the overall intellectual rigour and planning for outcome differs greatly from what I have been accustomed to. These people have had very different
backgrounds and experiences from what I have been used to. Overall as I am getting more used to the extreme chaos, I am finding the work of great interest and believe that my work is adding great value to the institute.
hanza
Hanza Crawford

This week we found ourselves visiting the Cauthon Institute in the city of Kingston in planet Entropy in the system of the same name, where we met the fine fellow of Hanza Crawford, the director of the local Institute. This is a very fine facility with excellent equipment and a place I could enjoy working in for some time. Our spokesperson for the group, Stella Cauthon, was suffering from the universal marmalade malady (One day I hope to begin deep research on this short term debilitating effect), and so Crash our rather incompetent pilot, stepped up as our leader. Despite his rather loose attitude and casual way of flying large and small craft, he was able to behave very effectively in this role. He was able to get us all excellent accommodations within the facility for our stay. Crash also dealt well with the Imperium representative Commodore Rothman and after our crew member Itzy explained his relationships with senior government representatives within the system of Winston, it was agreed that we should make haste to this place and to set up yet another branch of the Cauthon Institute. This work, though taking me away from my research interests, is very valuable for the Institute and the spread of scientific knowledge that I am finding very exciting.

Hanza also pointed out that there was an Ancients site in the system Colada.
crash
Jon "Crash" Straker

Activity over the next two days revolved around this new plan, supplies, ship preparation etc. Our chief engineer, Spanner disappeared for some hours, returning with a modest smile having obviously procured important ship equipment or maybe something for a personal project. Our operational staff were tasked with recruiting a temporary navigator due to the lack of navigational skills within the group caused by the marmalade malady. Itzy sent urgent communications to her people on Winston and  arranged for appropriate  respectful containers for the remains of those members of the group who had died tragically prior to my recruitment. Our Chief of Ship Defence, Anton, did something important with big guns on the ship, but I was of course not interested so do not know or care what this was. [Changed a projectile gun to a sand-caster - useful defence to lasers.]
leon
Leon Baccarat,
navigator supreme

The team tasked with recruiting a new navigator made a terrible mistake, they found a horrible man called Leon Baccarat who is most distasteful. Crash, our semi-competent pilot, returns just prior to us shipping out dressed in flying overalls, leather jacket and shining mirror sunglasses. This has not increased my confidence in his abilities, but seems to improve his.

The week trip to Winston was uneventful except for the disgusting behaviour of our hired navigator and his advances to the female members of the team. His lolling tongue roaming eyes and sweaty hands meant I was forced to use certain medical applications to calm his appetites and behaviour, something I  generally try to avoid.
Local sectors

I was lucky enough to be on the bridge at the time when we arrived in Winston from jump-space and was rather surprised by the reactions of the crew who had been here before. They were very surprised to see a large number of Zhodani military ships. Everything from four large cruisers down to twenty-five destroyers as well as a field of wreckage of the Imperium variety. The communications with the planet seemed quite tense and unfriendly and it was not until the authorities understood we were here to visit the Ende family and that the family were of great importance that we were allowed to dock. After docking we were once again told to stand ready and to be inspected. I have no love for the Zhodani and was rather worried about what was to happen next, however once the airlock was opened I was a little relieved. A young woman in a school uniform with two Zhodani guards awaited us. I found out later that this was the mother of Itzy and Hoff Ende and she was a great fan of cosmetic surgery. She was very pleased to see Itzy, received the remains of Belle with due respect and showed excellent manners as the new members of the group were introduced to her, Contessa Ende. She then invited us all (except that horrid navigator) to her residence where good food drink and news catch-up was undertaken.

The party was informed that Winston is now part of the Zhodani empire in all but formal naming. The Zhodani have complete control of the system but play little part of the day to day activity on the planet Winston, and are not seen a great deal on the streets Ravens End. The Montrose  family are no more and Contessa Ende is now the governess of the planet.

We retire to a very comfortable lounge where the Contessa tells us it is safe to talk openly, though our chief engineer Spanner still does a detailed check for listening and other devices of spying. Most of us sit quietly whilst some who shall remain nameless partake of the disgusting interaction with Zhodani, and Itzy and his mother talk openly. Most of the talk is of no interest to me, being about things in the past, family members, other familial activity. However, Contessa does ask Itzy about myself and the other new members of the group from the Cauthon Institute seeming to want to be sure of our integrity and our true allegiances making sure that she is satisfied that we are allied to the Cauthon Institute and not the Imperium.

The next morning I return for breakfast over-hearing giggles from some of the group about what happened last night between Contessa Ende and Crash, and that if Crash had just been a little more good-looking ... I took no interest in this childish activity.

After breakfasting Contessa took us for a tour of the city and potential sites for the construction of a new Cauthon facility. I took great interest in this and was very pleased to see the enthusiasm that Contessa saw in this project. She was, however, adamant that the activity that the new institute is to undertake should in no way have a connection to the Imperium and no persons from the Imperium establishment should be employed. Crash was unable to do the consent paperwork involved with establishing leases, agreements and the like and I was forced to intervene, to remove all crayon from official documentation and re-submit appropriate formal establishment for a new Cauthon Institute.

Natasha Veriskya,
Zhodani navigator
The group was very happy with the outcome and we were ready for our next task. It was decided that the planetary system of Hrunting would be the next of interest for us and our task of opening many more new branches of the institute. However, we were then given news that our disgusting navigator had not followed orders and had not stayed on board our ship, instead finding his way to the planet surface and in no short time finding himself arrested, tried and shot. A most odious human and for one of which I have no sympathy. However this meant we were not able to leave until another navigator could be found. Contessa once again was of great value to us finding us a new one in short order. However this person was a Zhodani and myself and some others protested at this, but to no avail, no other navigator could be found and we were forced to take her on. Her name is Natasha Veriskya, and though I have great distaste for this form of sentient being. I have found that unlike most of her kind she does not seem to force herself upon one. I think the new spray deodorant that I was supplied is also aiding in this, I will need to analyze this and begin making in my laboratory.

Because of this new crew member, we decided to take a detour back to Entropy before heading to Hrunting, so as to be able to then replace this temporary Zhodani with a navigator we can feel more comfortable with. This proves to be futile as on our return to Entropy we are unable to find a replacement navigator, and as such, we will be stuck with Natasha for the for seeable future. However some very important intelligence was garnered by this otherwise futile detour. Crash was able to find out, whilst looking for the new navigator, that our esteemed colleague Stella Cauthon was not who she is purporting to be. I was dumbstruck. I met her only a few months ago, and was introduced to her by my director at the time, as a minor but important member of the Cauthon family itself. Now I find out that she is nothing more than a con artist and flagrant liar. Crash informs us that she is nothing more than a wealthy play-girl who has changed her name and is flying around the galaxy having fun. I am appalled and must in due course confront her on this. I have been duped and my honour and trust deeply disturbed. This will have to wait for the marmalade malady to abate of course.

Finally, for this entry in my diary I can say we traveled safely to Hrunting, an Imperium system with a gas giant. Being an Imperium system the authorities were not pleased with our navigator and after taking her away questioning her, and us, as to her background, she was returned to our ship wearing a red collar that I am informed can be very dangerous to her health if she misbehaves. She is not happy about this, but I think she expects this sort of treatment whilst in Imperium space and she is getting paid. I think she will remain on the ship and not wander off like our last navigator. Not having access to the funds of Stella, we travel to the surface and stay in a rather cheap and basic hotel. I so wish my new friend Stella had not used such trickery to hide her real self from us all, I lament the loss of trust in her and the nice big bank account she has. Crash was able to make contact with the Imperium bureaucracy and he believes we need to discuss our proposal of a Cauthon facility with the High Minister of the planet Hunting. He has done a good job arranging initial meetings with lower level functionaries who have shown favour to our proposal and have put in place meetings for the days ahead with the genuine decision-makers of the planet. Things are looking very positive for yet another success story in our plan to spread the ideals and functions of the Cauthon Institute.

Zeta 2 Prime is a major Imperium base in the Zeta 2 sector. When the party's corvette Cauthon arrived a few days ago, there was an Imperium heavy cruiser, three destroyers and five corvettes docked at the high port. During the two days they were down on the surface checking out the empty Cauthon institute there, another five destroyers arrived with seven more corvettes.

Planning to leave for Entrope, they headed out into low-grav space, one light-minute (18 million km) away from Zeta 2 Prime, and started the fuel burn to charge the jump capacitors. This process takes an hour.

After five minutes, a message arrived.

"This is Commodore Rothman of the Imperium heavy cruiser Sputnik. Cease your jump preparations and return to my ship to dock."

rothman
Commodore Rothman
The party could have attempted a jump. Even 10G missiles couldn't cover the 18M km to get to them in the hour needed to jump. But they decided to comply, cancelled the jump and docked at the Sputnik.

On board, they were ushered to Commodore Rothman's Ready Room to join him, his adjutants with some other jobs-worths and yes-men.

The Commodore came straight to the point.

"There have been some anomalies on a local planetoid," he said. "As representatives of the Cauthon Institute, I require you to investigate."

Planet Augustus. 10% gravity. No atmosphere

"We will send a corvette The Painted Lady with you for military support. They will stay in orbit while you do your science."

"Why should we do this?" said Stella. "We aren't connected to the Cauthons."

"You yourself, Miss, your surname is Cauthon. You claim to be a relative of Matt Cauthon, the founder of the Cauthon Institute. Your ship was given to you by the Cauthon Institute. Your ship is even named 'Cauthon'. That sounds pretty 'Cauthon Institute' to me."

"Touche," observed Anton.

Half a day later, they were in geostationary orbit around Augustus.

Preliminary scans of the surface showed nothing, but Heidi and Knodel's Science station spotted an anomaly. A large source of X-rays. When the high-res optical scanners were focused on it, they spotted a red dot.

To the air-raft!

They all headed to the surface in the air-raft flown by the new pilot Jon Straker. All were dressed in vacc-suits: Anton and Itzy at the front. Next row Buzz & Hoff. Then Heidi & Spanner.

Knodel and Stella stayed on the Cauthon. Stella didn't want to break her nails or muss her hair in a vacc-suit.

Down on the ground, they explored the portal. It was like the one in the Cauthon tunnels (beneath the Cauthon Institute in Seven on 728-907) which came out next to the red lake. It was a three metre circle of what looked like mercury, but on its side. There were several desiccated and frozen husks of slishers lying in front - 12 in all.

There was no sign that the slishers were trying to get back through or moving out; just lying there. If this portal was like the Cauthon tunnels one, then it was known that you could pass through FROM this direction - just not get back the other way. Or be organic matter - and be dead; they were well dead.
They took a slisher husk back to the air-raft. Then headed back to Cauthon in orbit.

Knodel dissected the husk. His preliminary conclusion was that it has been here more than one year but less than ten.

They then contacted the Corvette, who sent down a squad of marines to secure the site.

Doctor Knodel wanted to send a nuke through the portal. So they contacted Commodore Rothman back at the fleet, and after a brief discussion, he gave the authorization for a ten megaton device.

So the Imperium military engineers set up a rail to launch the nuke through the portal. The nuke itself was a silver car-sized object.

The group watched the site from orbit in the Cauthon with their high-res optical telescopes.

The ground crew withdrew to safe range and the nuke, with a timer, was launched through the portal. Almost instantly, a black pod (no spikes) came back through the portal. It was so instant that it almost looked like the two objects crossed at the barrier.

A panicked message came up from the Corvette over the party's radio from the ground troops: "Advise?"

Everyone in the group all spoke at once:
"pod contains aliens, it must go back"
"unscrew the pod"
"don't let the end unscrew"
"the pod offers no threat"
"open the pod!"
"blow it up"
"throw it back"

The Painted Lady Corvette Captain, also watching this unfold, yelled out "What do they do? Just one of you speak!"

Everyone in the group all spoke at once again:
"unscrew the pod"
"don't let the end unscrew"
"open the pod!"
"blow it up"
"throw it back"

They could then hear panicked firing and shouting from the surface marines over the radio. Lots of shouting.
bang

Suddenly, there was a bright flash, centred on the pod. Bright as the sun. The radio-chat instantly turned to a high-pitched white-noise whistle.

It was so bright that the high-res telescope CCD arrays burned out.

When new (not so high-res) optics were focussed on the planet, there was a big hole around the portal site, which was now glowing red with boiling lava.

Sang immediately went outside for a space walk to get the sensors replaced on the high-res scope. Her original conclusion suspected that this wasn't an Imperium nuke. The blast was wrong. And it was very intense. If it was a nuke, she estimated that the power would be 1000 megatons - 100 times what was sent through.

And the X-ray source still there.

Straker did some calculations on the back on an envelope.

"I think it's a wind kite," said Straker.

"Why do we care about this?" said Stella.

After seven hours, the entire Imperium navy joined the group in orbit.

Stella invited the Commodore and his team on board the Cauthon. For a meal catered by her Michelin ranked chef Wayne Belly.

"My experts say the portal is still there," began the Commodore. "The explosion time was roughly the same time as the timer that was on the nuke. But how would they know we're gonna shoot a nuke through?"

"K-vantum entanglement?" posited Knodel.

"Did they just send something back just to spite us?"

"I sink it was automatic. Like automatic defender."

Later on.

"Any of you know the scientist Gnostic Hands?" said the Commodore. "His writings mentioned a Ancients' garbage chute. Got steeper and steeper. Could this portal be the tail end of one of them."

"But why does it glow pink?" asked Sang. "The garbage chutes were always dark on the inside."

The Commodore then took Hoff to one side: "I want to destroy this from orbit. Is that a good idea?"

Hoff didn't want to commit to an answer.

"Then speak to your science friends. I need some advice here. We can't have this portal standing here. We can bring in a battleship or a dreadnought. Is that a good idea?"

"I do not sink more powerful veapons vill help you here," said Knodel.

The rest of the party disagreed. "It wouldn't hurt."

It would take six weeks minimum - both to send out X-boats with a message, and then have the battleships arrive.

The next morning, the party planned to go down on a air-raft and hover next to the portal: Sang, Hoff, Knodel, Straker, Anton, Itzy, Buzz.

Straker flew the air-raft down next to the portal itself - which looked unscathed. But he hit some turbulence from the lava and suddenly jolted the craft.

Buzz and Knodel, not known for the zero-G skills, fell out. Knodel had plugged the seat-belt into an adjacent socket. Buzz was too much of a man to worry about seat-belts.

They fell thirty metres - the fall was broken by lava.

Straker made up for his jolt and dived the air-raft down to rescue them. The vacc-suits thermal protection was enough to stop damage in the short time, but the suits were ruined. So, back up to the Cauthon.

The party scorned their pilot and asked for "an expert" from the Commodore. He sent over a second air-raft pilot, Betsy Driver.

She flew down to the portal again. Just her, plus Sang, Anton, Knodel, and Itzy. Here, they conducted some experiments. Shooting different things through the portal.
  • Fires a single shot - no change
  • Then 50 cal. - no change
  • Then 50 cal burst - no change
  • Grenade through - no change
  • Lightning bolt - no change
  • Bigger bolt - big x-ray burst (1/400th of the energy of the lightning bolt)

The portal was originally on the side of a hill. After the explosion, there was no hill behind it, so you could fly around behind it. Looking from this side, the portal could not be seen. A rock thrown this way just goes through. No one was brave enough to try it themselves.

Back in the Cauthon, the group decided that they had exhausted all experiments here. So they advised the Commodore to do the same as the troops in Seven: build a structure around the portal, when the lava had cooled.

The Commodore's Adjutant noticed that the Cauthon had four hard-points. So he offered to fit Imperium weapons to these hard-points. The group was happy for this to be done. Anton was the best gunner of the group, so he got to choose:
  • One twin-missile launcher.
  • One anti-missile launcher
  • Cannons
  • Cannons

The Commodore then gave them a set of missions:
  1. You are headed to Entrope. There is a Cauthon Institute there in the city of Kingston. I would advise check in there first.
  2. This Entrope Cauthon Institute is the only one in the Sword Worlds. So more Cauthon Institutes in the Sword Worlds would be good.
  3. I believe you have contacts in Winston. That (Sword World) system has been interdicted by the Zhodanis. Currently, we can not even send Imperium ships to the Winston system. The Zhodanis have some super-weapon there which takes them apart. So, setting up a Cauthon Institute there would be a good "foot in the door".
  4. There are no Cauthon Institutes in the Darrian Confederation. After the fall of Winston, those pointy-earred mouth-breathers have ejected our diplomats,  so a Cauthon Institute in maybe Zamine or Mire would be useful.

The Cauthon got refuelled and headed off into jump-space for the two-sector hop to Entrope.

During the week's travel:

  • Sang's invisibility manifested a few nights. Periods of a few hours during the night, her body would go invisible.
  • Anton still pissed formic acid.
  • Itzy senses were still amplified.
  • Dr Knodel worked out that the slisher husk died two years ago.
  • Sang discovered the Imperium dead-man explosives planted in a few places on the Cauthon. These would trigger if ever disconnected and blow a hole through the bulk-head. It was standard design for Imperium ships used as a safety measure should a ship ever be captured.

walsh
Sydney Walsh
They arrived a Entrope. Docked at the high port, then took the elevator down to the surface and went to Kingston.

Here they visited the X-Boat Corporate offices and re-united with Sydney Walsh. As he was now working for the Cauthon Institute, Anton's X-boat employee contract was terminated.

There was a big sheaf of letters for Hoff and Itzy from Contessa Ende. She was having a whale of a time, now governess of Winston.

Anton in bed
Itzy Ende recovering
Itzy, Sang and Anton slowly wake up in the Cauthon Institute's "hospital" feeling somewhat worse for wear and with the harsh realization dawning upon them that Riley (their pilot), Gnostic (their navigator), Belle (their medic), Stasi (their best soldier) and Pi (well he was new) were gone.

Tears fell down their cheeks but were quickly replaced by the reality that they quickly needed a new crew. (Pragmatism always outlasted emotion in this group).

All three were also acutely aware of an uneasy feeling in their very being. Anton, in his groin, as his small and inadequate member was being replaced by a large mushroom growth that leaked acid. Sang had tingling feelings that came and went while Itzy could hear every minute noise. These were unnatural occurrences and were causing them all unease.

Hoff meanwhile mumbled into his marmalade.

Knodel
Dr Knodel
Dr Gilbert seemed to oversee the hospital, and he had alongside him a small greying man with a goatee and an annoying accent.

"I am Dr Knodel" Dr Gilbert's companion advised. " I vill be experimenting … ahhh taking care of you and I vill twavel wiff you – I am a scientist"

[New party member 1 introduced – Darryl's Dr Detlef Knodel]

"We need a pilot: croaked Itzy "and someone who can navigate."

"We have just the team" advised Dr Gilbert and soon after, ushers in a stunning young woman who they soon learn has the name Stella Cauthon.

Stella
Stella Cauthon
She claimed to be the niece of the founder of the Cauthon Institute and has inherited substantial wealth. She is a diplomat and a trader and quickly advised a drooling Itzy and Anton that she will be travelling with them.

[New party member 2 introduced – Richard's Stella Cauthon.]

"But we still need a navigator and pilot," said Itzy again.

"I can navigate darling," Sella states gently. Itzy nods, drooling. [Stella has an appearance of 17] "And I have a pilot and bodyguard too – let me introduce them"

crash
Jon "Crash" Straker
Two men come into the room and introduce themselves as Buzz "Cut" the soldier and Crash, the pilot.

[New party members 3 & 4 introduced – Jamie's Crash and Shane's Buzz.]

"Why are you called Crash?" askes Anton hesitantly.

"Best not ask" Stella interjected "He has a habit of … well … you know … flying recklessly".

"So, what is your destination?" Dr Gilbert asked.

"We are employees of the X-boat Corporation out of Entrope working for Sydney Walsh, and need to deliver X-boat mochilas to first Arcadia and then Garda Villis and finally return to Entropy"

"You are a long vay from home," remarked Dr Knodel.

"Indeed – thanks to a navigational mishap from our dearly deceased friend Gnostic" replied Anton.

After a week, the three injured survivors were fit to travel.

Heidi
Heidi Vasovagal
During that time, Dr Gilbert found another scientist to assist Dr Knodel's genetic work. She was Heidi Vasovagal, a recent graduate. [Steven's new party member]

We also had a new ship which had been a part of the negotiations with the Cauthon Institute. It was a 450 tonne Imperium Pathfinder class Corvette. It had a Jump-3 drive, 6G grav-drive with inertial dampeners, eight state rooms, one mess, kitchen, sick bay, laboratory, four hard points for weapons, and a 40-tonne hold.

In addition to that Stella had her own personal two-man shuttle – The Pickle. The Lost Crown would be sent back to Entropy whilst the 20-tonne Pickle could fit in to the new ship's hold together with our air raft and other gear.

"You need to name your ship," said Dr Gilbert.

Various names were proposed but we landed on The Cauthon by majority vote. The ship came with a crew of three, all Cauthon Institute fellows: Wayne Belly – a Michelin star chef, Rudy Brobel technician, and Danny Broomhold – an appearance of 17 and Stella's "bit on the side without the need for emotional connection" and valet.

The Cauthon has eight state rooms and they are assigned to :
  1. Dr Knodel also doubling as his lab and aid station.
  2. Stella
  3. Buzz and Crash
  4. Sang and Heidi
  5. Hoff and Itzy
  6. Anton
  7. Danny
  8. Wayne & Rudy

We now successfully jump to Imperium system Arcadia and then to Garda Villis. At each location we deliver the mochilas and stay in luxury 5-star hotels funded and insisted upon by Stella.

Neither location was particularly interesting however the week-long jumps were event filled.

It becomes very clear that Anton, Sang and Itzy have different genetic and cellular make up.

Different from each other and different from us "normal folks".

Knodel
Dr Knodel
As noted earlier, Anton's groin has a large mushroom growth that leaks formic acid. Sang had tingling feelings that come and go while Itzy could hear every minute noise.

Dr Knodel is very interested and takes samples spending days with his microscope glued to his eye.

However, he is most interested in Sang. From time to time her arm and indeed her whole body disappears – a phenomenon known as transparency. This state is disrupted when touched by a 3rd party and visibility is reestablished.

This was very frustrating for Knodel as every time he tried to take a blood sample or investigate the invisible state, Sang would reappear.

Despite Knodel's frustration and Sang's bewilderment we leave Garda Villis for Entropy. This would necessitate a jump to Margesi and then a jump to Entropy. The alternative was a jump to Zeta 2 and then to Entropy. Zeta 2 was a restricted military planet however had a Cauthon Institute and so was the preferred route.

We arrive at Zeta 2 after a further week of Knodel experimentation (may I say to no avail). This system had a bunch of military ships in orbit around the major space port: several destroyers, a heavy cruiser, and a five corvettes.

"Now do as we are told," warns Stella.

We dock and are quickly boarded by soldiers who command us to lie on the deck. Stella talks to them (she is very persuasive and attractive) and the party are taken to the surface of the planet to the "Cauthon Institute" which was a large unused warehouse with several bunks and kitchen facilities – a military facility.

"This is unoccupied – what has happened to the Institute?" politely asks Stella.

"Stay here miss" one of the soldiers says while ogling her and goes and gets his superior Major Morgan.

Morgan seems a very reasonable man and advises the Institute was closed due to illegal activity. He was not prepared to elaborate but after much discussion was prepared to allow the Institute to restart and for one member of the team to be left.

"I have just the person" said Stella glancing across at Knodel.

We asked for the Cauthon records however the Major was unwilling to provide the documented copies but was prepared to send them electronically albeit that would take a week or so.

We agreed he would send them to our ship.

Time to go to Entropy we all agreed deciding to leave Rudy (not Knodel) as the Cauthon representative.

"What a nice helpful man Major Morgan was" mused Stella as they started their navigational processes and readied for the jump.

The group is in the 'H' building, in a city of the Ancients on a planet seeking to kill them right down to the cellular level. They are surrounded by creatures called slishers, a huge 14 legged spider-like creature looms over the building, the group have machine guns, sunglasses and are on a mission. A mission to return home.

"Well if I am going down, I'll make sure this machine gun is empty first" exclaims Stasi.

"Yeah me too" replies Itzy.

"Anton is somewhere out there and I hope he has the same attitude," says Stasi.

And as the plans of hope met the gurgling whirlpool of reality to finally disappear down the drain of despondency the group stood feeling that there was no way out. A minor plan came to fruition. Spanner  fired up one of Emerse's drones to fly it high up to the ceiling of the large room the group was in, hoping to find some way that they could exit the building and evade the slishers and then to retreat out of the city and hopefully survive another day.

Suddenly a massive crashing sound and a large spider leg was sticking through the blockaded door, the door hanging off it's hinges and the detritus stacked in front to blockade the group, scattered throughout the room.

The speaker rigged up to Emerse's Tamagotchi suddenly began to speak.
"How many coordinates do you have?"

"Um just about one, it is taking us some time." replied Spanner via the communicator.

"Oh yes now we have one"  he then quickly responded as he realized that the creature was not going to hang about much longer.

"Give it us."

"What do we get?"

"Your lives."

"We want to go home. We go home then you get it."

"Agreement."

Stalling for time Spanner says "We need to test it, is that OK?"

"Proceed."

The group was indeed trying to stall, the plan formed as the door crashed in, send a message through the portal to tell the others on the other side to stop firing as we are trying to come through. The portal needed to be opened and a message sent through before any attempt to send the group through.  Spanner continued the negotiation with the spider.

"We need pods in order to go through."

"They are coming."

The group grabs a piece of inert organic mushroom material that they know can pass through the portal and Gnostic and Riley discuss and scrawl a message upon it:

Dear Cauthon Institute,
This is the x-boat delivery team (that arrived on the ship the Lost Crown). We will be coming through this portal in two round pods <hastily scrawled picture>.
After those two pods come through destroy all else that comes through.
Send a tactical nuke back through the portal.
You do not have much time.

portal
portal
With the message complete, the coordinates begin to be put into the desk of 128 mushroom shaped switches. Most of the group make sure they are well out of the way of the portal and what may come through it when it opens. Just before the final switches are pressed the group notices behind them a large spider eye staring at them through the large hole in the building where the door used to be. The portal begins to shiver and Stasi quickly throws the message through and dives into cover.

The sound of heavy machine guns can be heard and bullets begin raining through the portal.

Gnostic reaches around and quickly flips off the portal and the shimmering disappears.

The little speaker pipes up "comb my hair, comb my hair now!" and then more from the speaker, "What was that attack?"

The group works out that the Tamagotchi spoke the first utterance and the spider the second.

"Human defense" replied Spanner.
"Will they shoot you?"
"Yes"
"How long for two-legs to forget?"
"Two hours."
"We wait."

The group then discusses whether they should move to the other building where ramps and the like are, so as they have more control but as the discussion continues the group begins to understand that events are over-taking  them and it will be as the spider wants things.

Once again the spider speaks "Do you have angry weapons?"
"No"
"Do you have more coordinates?"
"No"

No further communication for some minutes and the tension and stress  begins to rise. The Tamagotchi begins speaking louder and more incessantly, "Comb my hair, I am sad, comb my hair."

Finally one of the group relents and strokes the screen of the Tamagotchi.

"No wonder Emerse was so up tight." could be heard.

"Where's Anton, he better hurry up or he is going to miss the bus" says  Riley.

Anton decides to return
Anton decides to return
Anton is outside, hidden and watching the slishers and large spider. He realizes that the group is still inside and alive but he is in some pain as the mushroom like growth in his groin moves shudders and slowly grows.

"Mmm time to find a way in and join up with the others I think, I can't do much else out here" he thinks to himself. Sneaking carefully through the newly strewn rubble.

He finds a small entrance into the building and rejoins the group.

Itzy hears a sound, turns and sees Anton walking across the room to join the group. His hearing makes him shake his head from time to time, some high pitched background keening sound that he never noticed before, something is happening, he knows he can somehow hear more.

After about 90 minutes, slishers begin to move into the room. They are not acting aggressively but move between the group and the entrance. A large pounding sound and the building shakes slightly, something is coming, the other spider.

Freshly laid pod
Freshly laid pod
A tentacle, fat as Anton's waist, glistening like wet leather, slowly begins snaking it's way through the large hole where the door used to be. After moving about a third of a way into the room, as the group slowly backs away, it stops.

For a short while nothing happens and then the tentacle moves and shivers and a large wet round pod plops out onto the floor, slick with mucus. Then another and another. In all six pods lie now in the room glistening with alien ooze. As the pods begin to dry, little spikes can be seen forming on the outside.

"I reckon these are the way home," says Riley wryly.

Two hours have now passed the pods are looking dry and some slishers unscrew the covers on three of the pods.

"Enter" says the spider.

"Umm we only need two thanks" replies Spanner.

"Enter"

"Well guys we don't have much option I think" says Spanner.

"Yeah it's time to do it boys, jump in and I'll set the co-ords." says Riley  "Leave room for me in the first pod."

So the group enters the three pods.

  1. Belle, Stasi, Gnostic, Pi Crust, and room for Riley in the first pod.
  2. Anton, Spanner, Hoff and Itzy clamber into the second.
  3. Ben Gunn and his harem of Zhodani girls jump into the third.

Riley puts in the last of the coordinates, then returns to the first pod and the slishers screw the plugs in place.

Unseen to the group the portal shimmers and opens. Nothing much can be seen of the other side, an empty looking room. The slishers meander around pushing, rolling and shoving the pods towards the portal. The slishers bump and weave, the pods rolling not only forward but sometimes round and round, mixing and rearranging the order they were laid out originally. The first pod is pushed through and then a second.

Suddenly all hell breaks out and bullets fly through the portal as the final four pods roll forward and through the portal. The shooting stops and the shimmering portal remains.

On the Cauthon Institute side of the portal, groups of soldiers begin their work. A squad behind cover train their weapons upon the portal. Another squad dash forward and one by one follow the same tactic, two men unscrew a pod, a third man pulls a ring and throws in a box of grenades and the pod plug is quickly screwed back into place. A dull thud is heard and onto the next pod. This is done to all the pods except for the first two. the final action being taken within the Cauthon Institute is a group of military engineers rapidly building the foundations and framework that within twenty-four hours will be a large concrete barrier over the portal.

Itzy awakes
Itzy awakes
A buzzing sound slowly can be heard as Itzy begins to experience. "I think I may be alive" he thinks to himself, I can hear sound. time passes and slowly his consciousness rises. He opens his eyes and knows he is safe. He lies in a hospital bed, his body totally swathed in bandages, multiple IV lines and wires with the humming and beeping of machines playing loudly around him.

A nurse enters the room and smiles at him.

"Finally awake I see."

"Yeah but feel like a box of bricks and nails."

"Yes you should, you were very badly injured. But it looks like you are going to make a complete recovery, other than the long term effects."

"Uh what you mean?"

"Well, there seems to be some change at a genetic level, the doctors are trying to understand right now, no prognosis of course, this is very alien."

"Oh."

"Same thing for your compatriot, Anton is his name I think."

"And the others?"

"All who were with you are alive, all badly injured of course, grenades do terrible damage."

"So Spanner and Hoff are ok. What about the others?"

"That funny man Ben and his ladies are doing fine, but he does not seem human what with all those growths on him. They did not get injured at all, they were in the first pod through."

"And the others?"

"Sorry to say they did not make it [no marmalade immunity for Belle in this case]. They were in the fourth pod and for some reason the soldiers decided to put an extra load of grenades in that pod. And Dr Gilbert's experimental hexafluoro-something acid."

Itzy lay back, the pain in his body now nothing to what he felt emotionally. Half the group wiped out in a single moment. As he drifted off to a healing sleep, questions floating around in his mind. What now? Where to now? When will the attack come? Who is going to fly the ship? Who is going to comb the Tamagotchi's hair? And what will become of the remainder of us?

Itzy's dreams haunt his fitful sleep.
