 by Richard

We leave the three guards and the unconscious Montrose bitch, Suzanne Prentis, at the cave entrance. Itzy had made sure she was well tied before he collapsed, marmalade dripping from his mouth.

Making our way down the tunnel and into the circular room, Split opens the far door using the four-finger hand-print before Riley and she lead the way down a sloping tunnel that we feel is spiraling down in a wide circle.

Split wears the crown and carries the staff. Gnostic wears the belt and the ring is back with the marmalading Spanner.

Ahead is more steam with another hand print. Gnostic tries to open it but fails; Split is successful and the steam dissipates revealing a large circular room.

In the centre of the room there is a large metal structure that the scientists Gnostic and Hoff think looks like a radio telescope receiver. Gnostic guessed, from dead-reckoning, that we were about under the centre of the crater.

There is a hand-print opener next to it and above high in the ceiling is a closed circular door like structure.

"Better not open that," says Gnostic. "From my calculations we are directly below the crater".

There appear to be five other exists, all with steam blocking them and with a hand print and a symbol next to them.

On the far wall is a large wall-size screen with stylized diagram of the room with symbols and glowing lights. There are several of the hand-prints next to the symbols.

The door we have just come through has a green light above it. The others have red lights.

After much debate and confusion, Riley places his hand on the hand print near the DNA symbol.

Nothing happens. Gnostic touches the same hand-print by the DNA symbol and it lights up.

Hoff then puts his hand on the opening mechanism at the door (by the DNA symbol) and the steam disappears revealing a tunnel behind. Footsteps coming toward us can be heard.

Hoff backs away, Liz and Riley draw weapons and everyone else carefully watches the door. The sound of footsteps gets nearer but nothing is seen.

Split puts her crown on and sees (and only she sees) a lizard creature standing near her. Before her very eyes it morphs itself into a muscled man with a large appendage and very small thong.

The servitor
We all watch Split speak to an unknown and invisible creature. The one-sided conversation goes for some time "Initiate procedure, open data base, list available procedures…. "

Split eventually takes the crown off and explains to us what is going on. It appears that Split has found herself a servitor that will respond to questions if it knows the information.

Knowing this we all suggest many questions, as only you can imagine, and Split puts back on the crown and resumes the one-sided discussion (from our perspective)

"What is your purpose" ("to serve you")

"What's behind the door with the tunnel?" ("that’s for The Shamed")

"Is that safe?" ("no")

"What's behind the door with the face?" ("main power")

"Behind the solar system" ("device activation")

"Behind the mushroom?" ("victuals supply")

"Behind the DNA?" ("servitor lair")

Split removes the crown and updates us. Armed with this information we start opening the doors one at a time except the one deemed "The Shamed" and dangerous.

The solar system symbol which we were advised is device activation – after a few attempts Anton opens the door and a low humming is heard. Split, Anton and Gnostic with the servitor go down the revealed tunnel. After a short distance they enter a circular room with a stylized carved picture of the solar system on the far wall - it matches the number of planets and major moons of the Winston system.

Winston is the closest planet to the big star, and the circle matches where the gas giant Lophomyrtus orbits. We suspect the little symbols are indications of Ancients: Winston, Formaline, the third moon of Lophomyrtus, and the outer planet Dollar.

We take an etching and retreat. (No electronics works in any part of this place.)

The face symbol – is actually an energy symbol which we were told is main power – we touch the symbol on the main screen and it goes green.  Liz then touches the hand symbol and the steam disappears revealing a passage which we go down. As we approach it gets warmer and warmer until we can bare it no more and retreat. Split sends the servitor down and after some 15 or so minutes it returns. Split then puts the crown on and enters into deep discussion. "Malfunction… needs repair… identify power source …."

By this time Gnostic has touched the screen and the energy symbol has gone red.
"Maybe I've turned it off," he says.

In the meantime, we have opened the DNA door again which we were told is the servitor lair. We go down a short passage to another circular room with three alcoves. After some questioning by Split it is clear there is only one active servitor.

Finally, the "mushroom" door which we are advised is sustenance. We open it and go down another short tunnel to a circular room with a large table in the middle. There are many symbols on the far wall representing different food types. Anton pushes the one for bread and a grey sludge appears on the table. Anton takes some in his hand and takes a bite. His eyes light up.
"that is the most delicious bread I have ever had" he proclaims.

Riley tries some: "yeah not to bad" he says.

Hoff takes a bite and immediately starts vomiting [having failed his poison defence roll].
"It's disgusting "he moans.

We try various other symbols which all result in a grey gelatinous goop appearing that has various tastes largely dependent on whether you make your poison save or not.

We leave the room and concentrate on the energy source.

"It seems to have cooled down," declares Gnostic. "I will go down".

Gnostic goes down the passage and we hear a scream from him as he rushes out his face white and fearful. "It's awful!" he whimpers.

"It can't be that bad," proclaims Split and goes down the tunnel. Another scream and she recoils in horror losing a Psyche point.

"Leave it to me" says Liz and goes down the tunnel. She comes back a minute or so later. "It's pretty ugly alright" she says. "It’s a large tentacled creature attached to wires. It seems petty agitated".

"Draw it" says Riley

"I can" volunteers Gnostic. A three-year-old could do a better sketch as it turns out

Energy source
"Leave it to me" says Liz. She rolls a 1 on her forgery skill and draws an amazing representation. In fact, it is so amazing and life-like that everyone who looks at it needs to make a Psyche roll.

Split puts back on the crown and starts engaging with her servitor.

Eventually she removes the crown and updates us. "The tentacled creature is the energy source but is in need of repair" she explains. "It requires the generative apthera of a volatile canker and the margrave of an avian spinosa."

"Well, where do we get those?" asks Gnostic

"All I can do is say what the servitor says" responds Split, "it makes no sense to me. I am not sure what those words mean. The servitor could help no more."

With that she puts the crown on and then starts uttering some numbers and letters. "1561271BC1098718, 0741027E0108760, "

"Coordinates?" says Gnostic.

"Write them down" says Anton

"It's too quick"

"It's ok" chimes in Riley "I remember them."

"Yeah yeah" says Gnostic

Riley then repeats them verbatim "I have a eidetic memory" he smiles contentedly.

With all of this information and everything else seeming a dead end, we decide its best to return to the Ende mansion and report our findings.

"Wait, we haven’t opened the roof door," says Riley

"Don’t do that!" reminds Gnostic

But too late. Riley had placed his hand on the symbol. Fortunately, nothing happened [failed door roll].

"The crater above is a lake of water. You will flood us all!" yelled Gnostic.

We decide to leave but realise the light on the tunnel trap (the rightmost hand on the board) door is now solid red; it was flashing red earlier.

"How long since that soldier was zapped?" asks Hoff.

"About 50 hours ago " responds Gnostic looking at his watch.

"Disable it at the screen again" suggests Belle.

"But how do we get back?" asks Riley "It will only be off for 50 hours"

"That’s what servants are for" responds Gnostic.

We all stare at him in disbelief seeing his humanity draining before our eyes.

"We need to go. Let's solve that later" says Split. "I think we have what we need with the map and the coordinates"

And with that we leave up the passages we came from until we get back to the cave mouth and the guards.

"Who tied up the Montrose bitch?" asks Belle leaning over her.

"That was Itzy," says Riley. "Why?"

"She's dead."

"Ooops" we say in unison.

We put her body with all the other Montrose bodies next to the Montrose truck. "This truck would be useful for us" says Riley.

"But it has a flat tyre" reminds Hoff. (The spare was also flat, being shot out last time)

"Why don’t a few of us go back to town, get a spare tyre and come back?" volunteers Riley.

With that Riley, Anton and Liz head back to town in the pick-up truck and to the Ende mansion.

We return the next day well-watered, fed and rested and with a spare truck tyre plus an additional five Ende guards and a mounted heavy machine gun. Contessa Ende had seemed well-pleased with our progress.

Meanwhile, it was an uneventful night for those who waited at the cave. While they waited, they buried the Montrose bodies (and Suzanne) but took her Montrose ID.

Upon the return of the spare tyre, it is fitted and Riley drives the Montrose truck with everyone on board back to the mansion. Split drives the pick-up and the tractor is left in the cave with eight Ende guards and a heavy machine gun.

The night ends with us having the following items for divvy up and action:
  • Montrose truck
One 53 Bedford S truck stolen from the Montrose's. Riley's plan is to have this painted and with a new number plate and different colour tarp.
  • ID of Suzanne Prentis of Montrose employment. Plan is to have Liz forge another's identity onto this. Maybe useful later.
  • Ring of Reflect - currently worn by Spanner and identified as a ring that absorbs 5 points of laser damage per shot (like armour).
  • Crown of the Ancients – currently in the possession of Split and identified that it allows communication with Ancients servitors.
  • Staff of the Enema – currently carried by Split and identified that when it hits someone they immediately void their bowl and lose next round's attack.
  • Jolly Jumper belt currently worn by Gnostic. Enables the wearer to jump 2D4 + 2 storeys (16m – 40m) but need a DEX roll when you land or take D6 hp per two storeys jumped.

"Coooo weeeee" called Spanner, peering down the tunnel, but definitely not passing the line defined by the circular smear of blood from the vaporised guard, Fritz.

There was no reply.

The slow plunks as blood dripped off the walls and roof of the tunnel echoed back quietly from ahead. Riley, Liz, Spanner, Anton, and Split were gathered just in front of the blood line, the other three Ende guards cowered behind them. Just beyond the blood line the tunnel transitioned from a rough natural cave to a perfectly circular smooth shaft. The shaft angled downward and curved slowly off to the left, heading in the direction of the water filled bowl-like crater we had found earlier.

"Go on then" encouraged Riley.

No one moved.

Spanner crouched down and studied the ground and the walls of the tunnel in front of the blood line. Nothing obvious that might cause a person to suddenly vaporise! No noises or odd feelings. Nothing.

Scratching a line in the dirt just in front of the blood line, Spanner turned towards the guards.
"So, he was running in front of you, and .... boom?"
"Yup" replied one of the guards, "Boom"
"Best head back then" suggested Split, "Get the others"

Meanwhile, back at the tunnel entrance, Emerse had been setting up the camp gear in the canyon in front of the cave. Gnostic and Belle were sleeping in the back of the pickup truck in the cave entrance, and Hoff and Itzy were standing around the tractor arguing about some minor point of 'Ancient' physics, about which neither knew anything.

Hoff decided to take a break and jumped up onto the back of the pickup. As he lay down to catch a few winks, Belle and Gnostic woke from their marmalade slumber and joined Emerse in the canyon.

"Do you hear that?" asked Emerse.

A faint buzzing was echoing down the canyon, slowly getting louder and louder.

"It's a plane" yelled Emerse, "Quick, help me throw this tarp over the tractor"

A light aircraft buzzed overhead
Emerse and Gnostic grabbed the sandy coloured tarp from the trailer and tossed it loosely over the tractor and trailer unit, before retreating into the cave. Peering up from the cave mouth, they watched as a light aircraft passed down the length of the canyon, passed the cave, turned back, and circled overhead a couple of times, before disappearing back in the direction it had arrived from.

"Those damn Montrose bastards" exclaimed Belle.
"Did they see us?" wondered Emerse.
"They circled right here" noted Gnostic.

"If they came from town for reconnaissance, no one would come to follow-up till tomorrow at the earliest" figured Belle.

"What's up?" questioned Split, arriving back at the cave mouth with the others, three guards in tow.
"A plane" reported Bell, "Circling overhead"
"Those damn Montrose bastards" exclaimed Split.
"More immediate though" broke in Spanner, "An Ancient's tunnel down the back of the cave!"

Riley, Itzy, and the three guards stayed on watch at the cave mouth, with two of the guards sent up the cliff face opposite the cave to their observation post, while Emerse and the others headed back into the cave to investigate the tunnel, and any possible reason for the vaporised guard.

Emerse monitored his pile of electronic equipment as the crew travelled deeper into the cave, and at about halfway to the explosion zone all his electronics shut down. The batteries still held a charge, but the electronics just wouldn't respond. We were in a 'dead' zone! Just like around the main Ancient site, and this new one. Sparks could be generated, and we knew the engines of the vehicles worked, so it seemed that beyond a certain level of technology the zone around the Ancient's sites somehow blocked all equipment.

Standing just in front of the blood line, Emerse attempted to discern if there was any reason that Fritz had been vaporised. With most of his electronics defunct, he tested a number of different things, including poking in the canary, both inside and outside of its cage. They were fine.

Anton's grenade rolled down the tunnel
"Maybe because Fritz was carrying a weapon?" Liz suggested.
"Nope" grunted Anton, rolling one of his grenades over the blood line.
"Let's come back tomorrow" suggested Gnostic, glancing nervously at the still dripping blood.

So, everyone returned to the cave entrance where watches for the night were planned. One person up on the observation ledge, one part way down the tunnel, and one at the cave mouth, at all times.

During the second watch while Split was keeping an eye on the tunnel depths, she detected a sudden puff of air, as if a distant door had opened quickly. Calling Riley and Belle who were out at the cave mouth with the night-vision goggles, they all ventured quietly part way down the tunnel back towards the blood line. But there was nothing, no sounds, no heat sources, no light, and no more puffs of air. After thirty minutes, Riley and Belle went back to the cave mouth to finish their watch.

After a quick breakfast in the morning, two of the guards were sent back up to the observation ledge, the third, along with Riley and Itzy, settled in at the cave mouth, and the rest of the crew headed back down the tunnel to resolve the blood line and discover whatever lay beyond.

"Well, I'm stumped" declared Emerse.
"Let's try this" stated Gnostic, extending his fingers to the blood line and pushing them forward.

Everyone else leapt back, in case of blood spray blowback, but Gnostic was unperturbed. He slowly pushed his hand, then his forearm, then his whole arm, past the blood line. Then he stepped forward and strolled onto the smooth shiny granite shaft.

"All good" Gnostic called.

Anton shrugged his shoulders and followed, Spanner close behind.

"Have you got any weapons?" asked Emerse.
"Not me" replied Gnostic.
"Nope" called Anton, "Unless you count these grenades"

Split unloaded her handgun and followed.

Muttering about intent and nervously brushing his hair, Emerse decided to guard the tunnel at the blood line. Liz and Belle kept him company. Gnostic, Anton, Spanner, and Split moved on down the shaft and were soon out of sight of the others.

The shaft was perfectly smooth, polished, totally dustless, and was descending and curving to the left.

An odd three fingered handprint
Pretty soon they came to a cloudy demarcation in the shaft. The shaft ahead was full of a light grey cloudy substance, like mist, swirling violently like it was in a storm, but somehow prevented from moving towards us. A three fingered hand shape was etched into the left-hand wall of the shaft, about a metre in front of the cloudy barrier.

"Wow, that's a weird hand shape" exclaimed Gnostic.
"Do we know what the Ancient's hands were like?" wondered Split.

"OOOWWW" screamed Anton, jerking his finger back from the cloudy barrier.

Half of the tip of one finger had been burnt off. Red cauterized skin was stretched tightly across his finger bone, small flakes molting off as we watched in horror.

"I don't recommend that" Anton hissed.

Gnostic quickly applied his enhanced First Aid skills and smeared on a burn cream.
[The burn inflicted 4 points of damage; the First Aid recovered 3 points. Gnostic has the Healing Touch talent which gifts him a bonus die for First Aid, and cures D3 points, as opposed to the normal 1 point]

"You idiot" complained Gnostic, "Like this"

Gnostic placed his hand up against the palm plate, with his pinky finger stretched away from the three etched finger shapes. It wasn't a perfect fit, but the stone flashed white behind the hand shape for a second, and the cloudy barrier quickly dissipated to reveal a larger oval chamber centred on the circular shaft. The shaft continued onwards on the far side of the chamber, but angling down at a much steeper gradient, and the walls of the chamber had four alcoves at chest height, two on each side of the main shaft. The alcoves were lit by a soft white light and each contained an item.

There was a crown, a ring, a belt, and a staff.

"I'll just check for anything odd" stated Spanner, and she studied each of the alcoves in turn.
"Nothing" she reported, "All clear" [Failed her Electronics roll four times!]

After a short hesitation, Split strode forward and picked up the ornate and jewel encrusted golden crown. "Wow" she exclaimed, "Look at this baby. So cool"

Anton grabbed the staff and gave it an experimental swing. The shaft was wooden, some strange hard and dense wood, the foot was shod in a golden metal, and the head was a small golden metal lizard.
Spanner picked up the ring, grinned, and slipped it onto her finger.
Gnostic lifted the belt and clipped it around his waist.

"Look" he said, "It's got an odd under-strap which clips down between the legs"
"And I feel lighter than normal" he reported.
"I reckon I could jump quite high" he continued.

Which he did. Gnostic launched himself off the ground and shot up like a rocket towards the roof of the chamber. Smooth polished rock. Solid hard rock. His head smashed into the rock, and he rebounded back to the ground. Landing lightly in a crouch, he staggered to his feet, blood running down his face in streaming rivulets from nasty wounds on his scalp.

"Ouch" he grunted, then slumped to the ground, dazed and concussed.

"Help him up" commanded Anton, "We had better report back to the others"

Split and Spanner emerged through the misty barrier
Anton led us out of the oval chamber, past the hand plate, and back up the shaft.
Turning back to hurry the rest of the crew up, Anton noticed that the swirling mists were back across the shaft, blocking any view into the chamber.

"Hey" Anton yelled, "Are you all still there?"
Silence ...

Then Spanner and Split popped through the mist, Gnostic appearing a little behind behind them.
"... we are here" Split was saying, "Where else would we be?"

They all made their way back, collecting Emerse, Liz, and Belle who were waiting patiently at the blood line, and soon arrived back at the cave mouth, joining Riley and Itzy.

"Two hours" commented Riley, "And what's that stupid thing around your groin Gnostic?"

Taking the belt off, Gnostic excitedly described the four items found in the oval chamber. And then requested some medical attention from Belle. "For my head"

Belle wasn't able to help [Steven failed the Medicine roll] but did manage to amputate the end of Anton's finger and tidily seal up the wound with a nice bandage.

Emerse was very excited about the four items found in the oval chamber and immediately whipped out his electric tool kit and began a thorough investigation. Starting with the staff, he carefully tested each item for materiality, magnetism, electrical activity, and radioactivity. He even gave them a lick to test for taste!

About an hour later, after examining the crown and carefully placing it back on the bonnet of the truck with the staff and the belt, Split picked it up for a closer look and carefully placed it on her head.
"Hmmm" she thought, "That feels GOOD".  But then she looked around.

The rest of the party had changed their appearance! Everyone was still there, still wearing the same clothes and doing the same things, but their heads had morphed into lizard heads! Their bodies, clothes and limbs were all normal. And they were all speaking in strange whistles and grunts; a different language!  Very strange.

Lifting the crown off her head, Split watched as everyone morphed back to themselves.
"Phew" she though, "Only temporary thank heavens"

"Hey, Split" called Itzy, "Why are you putting that crown repeatedly on and off again like that?"
Well, it's the weirdest thing" replied Split, explaining the effects to everyone.

"Let me try" asked Emerse.
"NO" exclaimed Split loudly, "That wouldn't be a good idea. I'll just hang on to this myself" she explained, clutching the crown possessively to her chest.

Emerse moved on to study the ring; that Spanner was still wearing.
"Can you take that off please" requested Emerse.
"NO" exclaimed Spanner, "Can't you just do your tests while I have it on?"
"Sure" Emerse replied, peering at the ring.
"I'm sensing a bit of a theme here" he informed the crew.

"And there is an electromagnetic signal broadcasting from the ring" he declared.

"CAR" yelled the guard from up in the observation post, and everyone scrambled for weapons. Well, not everyone obviously. Spanner activated Scurry, Emerse went for his testing kit, and Anton, who doesn't use projectile weapons, fingered his grenade pouch.

Scurry reported a truck approaching slowly down the canyon, eight visible occupants, all carrying large weapons. Itzy ordered the three guards into positions behind large rocks near the cave entrance. He and Liz climbed up towards the observation post and set up under cover with good sight lines up the canyons. Well, for the closest forty odd meters till the canyon wound its way around a corner.

"Warning shots only" commanded Anton, "Until we find out who they are"

The old green truck rumbled around the corner of the canyon and the guard let off his warning shot.
Straight through the windscreen, and straight through the driver's cheek!
The truck swerved into the canyon wall; the driver slumped over the wheel.

"YOU STUPID ASS" yelled Anton, "WARNING SHOTS ONLY!!"

But it was too late, submachine gun wielding men boiled out of the truck like bees from a hive, leapt into cover and returned fire. The "rat-tat-tat-tat-tat" of multiple machine guns echoed down the canyon and chips of rock pinged up around us.

The truck slowly hit the canyon wall

Liz's shot took one of the men through the shoulder and he dropped his gun and retreated behind the truck. Itzy dropped one with a shot through the eye, but no one else on our team was having any success. The return fire took out one of our guards, but it seemed that a standoff was developing.

"Surrender" called a female voice from behind the truck, "The Montrose claim this area"
"Those damn Montrose bastards" exclaimed Split.
"There are two of them sneaking up round the truck" called Itzy from above.

The truck slowly began to roll forward towards us as the men there began to push it from behind.
But two shots rang out from our remaining guards and the two front tyres burst.
"Not moving any more" grinned Riley.

Return submachine gun fire slammed into Itzy as he crouched near the observation post, spinning him around and he dropped flat as bullets ricocheted around him. [Chris spent 3 Luck points to roll a reduction in the damage. 4 on a D6 and Itzy was only damaged by 1 point. Otherwise, the 5 points of damage could have detrimentally changed the battle's outcome]

After unsuccessfully trying to "fire" the new staff by waving it and pointing in the direction of the attackers; and covered by a barrage of shots from our side while utilising his Stealth skill, Anton slipped across the canyon from the cave and scampered up to the top of the canyon wall. Moving up the canyon to a location directly above the truck, Anton spotted three groups of two attackers sheltering around the truck. The only female he could see was in the group at the back of the truck, so he pulled the pin from one of his grenades and attempted to lob it down on top of them.

"Flip" he grunted as he fumbled his throw, and the live grenade dropped from his fingers to the ground right in front of his feet. [A 20 was rolled on Ian's D20 roll against his Throw skill. Another roll is then taken, and if it indicates a miss, a Fumble has occurred. It missed, Fumble!] As the grenade bounced in front of his feet, Anton took a hasty swing with his foot, fortunately connecting, and the grenade sailed over the side of the canyon. "Phew" Anton sighed in relief.

[ DM mistake here: the grenade should have gone off, at Anton central. ]

"BOOM" echoed up from below. Anton peered over the side of the canyon edge to check the outcome. By a lucky break [Ian rolled a 1 on his Luck roll] the grenade had bounced down the side of the canyon and landed exactly where he had been aiming his original throw. The female and the other male at the rear of the truck had been blown apart. The male was obviously down, his machine gun gripped in his outflung hand, head lolling at an odd angle and blood pooling below him. The female was crawling back towards the back of the truck, trailing a line of blood across the canyon floor.

Moving towards the two men crouched at the front of the truck, Anton tossed another grenade which fell nicely between them.

The "BOOM" echoed around the canyon, with a simultaneous "CRACK" from Liz's rifle. One of those men went down, the other retreating towards the back of the truck, injured.

Silence.

"Scurry" instructed Spanner, "twenty metres up, scan the area around the truck and report back"
"Is that what you want?" hummed Scurry.
"Yes", and Scurry shot up into the air above the canyon floor, exactly twenty metres, and hovered briefly over the truck before flying back down the canyon a way. Shots rang out, but Scurry was quickly back. Spanner's monitor screen had shown no one left around the truck, apart from some scattered bodies, with the remaining attackers crouched behind some rocks about fifty metres past the truck, licking their wounds.

Anton sneaked along the top of the canyon wall till he could see the five remaining attackers below and carefully lobbed his third grenade over the side into their midst.

"BOOM"

Two of the figures, including the female, retreated further up the canyon, but three were left on the ground, in pieces! With the area clear, the crew moved up to search the truck and the bodies. Guns and ammo, food, water, and basic supplies. Nothing else of use. Each of the bodies had been wearing a stylish belt with a large M carved on the buckle. Proof of their origin.

Emerse sent his own drone to track the last two of the attackers, slowly moving away up the canyon, and Liz and Anton rushed off after them. Calling out when they got close enough, Liz suggested that they should surrender, before they were killed. [Shane was successful in his roll to Persuade them to surrender] As they stood to throw down their weapons, Anton tossed his final grenade.

"BOOM"

"What?" asked Anton as Liz stared daggers, "Those damned Montrose bastards"

They were still alive though, and Anton and Liz dragged them back to the others at the truck. Six dead Montrose bodies, and two unconscious. One dead Ende guard.

"The battle to us" cheered Riley.

"OK Gnostic" said Belle, "Let's try that head wound again"
Belle, successful this time, cured 6 points of Gnostic's head wound damage using the Medicine skill.

"Something else approaching" called Emerse, his drone still monitoring up the canyon.
A jeep, sporting a white flag, and occupied by four tall women, was approaching our location.

"Not more Montrose bastards?" wondered Split.

But no, as the jeep rounded the corner into sight and stopped, one of the female occupants stepped out and slowly approached, hands raised. They were Zhodani women, the "Pale Vampires"

"Are you OK?" she called, "We have been sent to rescue you"
"We are OK" called back Liz, "No need for rescue, as you can clearly see"
"Why did you think we needed rescuing?" asked Riley.
"We saw these Montrose operatives heading this way" the Zhodani replied, "Knowing you were somewhere in the area, we figured you might need some help and followed"
"How did you know we were in the area" asked Riley.
"We just know these things" the Zhodani responded mysteriously.
"So, do you have any Montrose ... bodies to dispose ... to take care of?" the Zhodani asked.
"Sure, would you like those" suggested Liz, pointing at the stack of dead.
"Can't help with those" she replied, "How about those two?" pointing at the unconscious pair.
"Well" suggested Liz, "We might want to question the woman, but take the man"
"Thank you" the Zhodani replied, scooping the body off the ground and throwing it over her shoulder.
"So, is that helpful to you" asked Liz as she began to walk back towards her jeep.
"Oh yes" she called back, "We owe you one. Take my card"

Flicking a business card through the air at Liz, she walked quickly back to the jeep and threw the unconscious man in the back. The jeep backed up, turned around, and headed back up the canyon.

Emerse watched through his drone's monitor as the jeep moved away up the canyon. After only fifty metres, a body was tossed off the jeep.

Subsequent checking revealed that the male Montrose was now fully dead, drained of blood and his skin stretched tight against his bones.

"It's true then" confirmed Liz with a shudder, "They do suck the blood of the living"
"But they don't have Lizard heads" commented Split, who had been using the new crown.
"But the dead bodies can't even be seen at all. They just disappear when I have the crown on!"

One we had confirmed that the Zhodani jeep had left the canyon, heading back towards Bitter End, we threw all the bodies in the back of the Montrose truck, covered them with tarpaulins, towed the truck forward past the cave mouth, and abandoned it some distance down towards the Ancient's bowl-like, water-filled, ground depression. Then we headed back into the cave to explore deeper down the Ancient's shaft.

"You" shouted Anton at the guard who had shot the driver of the Montrose truck, "Come with us"

Hoping that the armed guard might explode in a misty cloud of blood, Anton commanded him to pass the blood line and lead us onward.

"Um" the guard hesitated, "That's not safe though is it"
"Sure it is" Anton instructed, "These guys were all down there earlier"
"But they weren't armed" noted Emerse.

The guard carefully placed his rifle on the ground and walked forward.
"A smart one" noted Belle quietly.

Anton kicked the rifle along the ground, across the blood line. Belle just wandered through, carrying her weapon, and everyone followed.

"Hmm" concluded Emerse, "Not weapons then"

Once everyone was back at the misty barrier, Gnostic placed his hand on the palm plate to open it up.
But nothing happened. Trying unsuccessfully a few times more, Gnostic stepped back with a curse.

"I feel good" volunteered Split and placed her hand on the palm plate.
The misty barrier dissipated, and we entered the oval room.

"Cool, let me try that crown" suggested Anton.
"No way" responded Split, back up, "How about I try the staff?"
"Sure" said Anton, shrugging his shoulders and handing it over.
Taking the staff firmly in her right hand, crown on her head, Split freezes for a moment.

"So cool" she stated, "The staff is humming like an amplifier"
"And you can't have it back" Split told Anton.

We turned towards the shaft and prepared to move on into its unknown depths.

The tunnel descended in front of us

 by Richard

As requested by Contessa Ende (mother of Itzy, Hoff, Split, and Belle Ende), we have landed with Ye Faerie Queene at the Ende mansion on the outskirts of the town of Bitter End, population 10,000 (4,000km from Ravens End.)

The town is on the coast and on fertile plains and savannah. The main industry is agriculture however with 1950's technology (TL6).

"Alpine"
Emerse takes sole residence of a state room in Ye Faerie Queene and continues to play with that damned Tamagotchi "Alpine" trying to get its chat GPT operational and connected to the Galactopedia (he soon found out there is no connection from where we are and therefore no updates) whilst he brushes his hair nervously.

Spanner and Itzy also stay on board the ship whilst the rest of us take residence in the mansion.

After removing the ship's starting mechanism, Riley takes stock of the whisky whilst bemoaning the fact that there is only 1,000 kms of hydrogen fuel left in the tanks.

"No use to us now," he muses.

A few hours later, Contessa arrives.

"Hi Mum, when and how did you get here?" – the Ende children all ask.

"I flew in just now - jet. We are going to build a hydrogen refueller here, seeing the Faerie Queene is here" she advised. "But that will take a couple of weeks".

"Over that time, I have some work for you" she continued. "We will discuss it over breakfast tomorrow"

"Well, in the meantime let's go to the pub," suggests Riley.

"Yes" agree Itzy, Liz, Hoff and Split.

We commandeer an old van and head to one of three pubs in town (The Famous Cinnamon, The Smooth Buffalo and Wacky Lion). Deciding on the Famous Cinnamon we drink ourselves silly until closure with only two minor incidents.

Liz decided to see if she could get free drinks and got herself drugged for her sins. We managed to avert trouble from that although Liz remained unconscious the rest of the night. We acquired the glass that contained the drugged liquid to test later.

Upon leaving, Split suggested she drive.

"I am pufffectlly alwight" stated Riley.

"You are intoxicated," replied Split.

"I am always intoxitated" mumbled Riley "but the last person who said that lost their teeth, and you are too pwitty to be toothless".

"Could have other uses though," chipped in Itzy grinning lecherously

"Hops in thin" commanded Riley who then sped off.

"Oops, that’s a tight corner" mutters Riley as he loses control of the vehicle some ten minutes later sending the van rolling across the road and landing upside in a ditch, dripping petrol. [ Riley fumbled his drive roll ]

Riley and Hoff are sent through the windscreen [taking 8 points of damage each after applying luck to reduce it] while the others receive minor scrapes and lacerations.

"Betta get out of dare" yells Riley "it's going to go bang". Moments later the van explodes.

We walk back to the mansion (an hour), Split playing the piano-accordion and us all singing a bawdy tune.

We finally find our beds and sleep the rest of the night but are a sorry sight at breakfast as Contessa walks in.

"What happened?" she demands.

"We got drunk and had a wee accident" volunteers Riley.

"Were you drink driving again Riley?" she asks

"Nope" is the reply as he drinks his coffee.

"Anyway, I have work for you" says Contessa.

She sat us down and gave some exposition:

The planet Winston to was discovered to have Ancients sites on it, early on. After the Imperium had terraformed Winston hundreds of years ago, they sent in their archeologists who worked for many years but the final reports were 'nothing significant'. This was, in fact, a lie. After the planet was ceded to the Sword-Worlders, your Ende ancestors started working on the ruins themselves and they made a few discoveries. Occasionally something interesting pops up.

"So, I want you to go to "the quarry", some three hours' drive away and talk to Mike Reich, the "quarry" manager.

"First, can you call a doctor Mummy?" asks Hoff, still bleeding after last night. "Me and Riley aren’t feeling too good."

The pick-up truck
A doctor is called and we are somewhat cured before we head off on our drive, not in the van (that of course exploded the previous night) but a pick-up truck crammed with the eight of us – three in the front and five in the tray along with cans of water and petrol.

We drive the three hours along the coast and through the savannah until we reach a canyon going into the hills. We turn off and head into it as instructed. The road is a bit rougher here and there are several side roads into other smaller canyons, but we continue straight until we get to the end.

Here, we enter a large 500m diameter crater - a perfect half-sphere - with its sides and floor unnaturally made of smooth granite. There are a number of corrugated iron buildings constructed in the middle, with a number of rifle-wielding men near them.

Suddenly, there is a cry out from Emerse.

"My instruments aren’t working, and Alpine my Tamagotchi is limp"

"As is Scurry" observes Spanner.

Emerse jumps off the tray of the truck and takes out a small pick and starts to chip away at the rock floor of the crater.

Shortly thereafter, a bullet narrowly misses Emerse and ricochets about the canyon.

Three men with rifles approach. "Don’t damage the granite!" they warn.

"But your bullet will have done more damage " Emerse starts to argue before wisely shutting up.

We tell them we are here on orders of Contessa Ende and that we need to speak with Mike. We are taken to the shacks and poured a coffee and introduced to Mike Reich.

Mike explains that they have been here about eight years but it was "picked over" before they found it. They have been investigating he formation ever since. Of course, the Imperium must not know of any secrets they find.

He warns not to damage the rock as it will damage you back. A few years ago, a worker took a pick axe to it. He made very little impact however was found a few nights later dead with the very same pick axe buried in his head.

Emerse shuffled uncomfortably at the relaying of this story.

Mike said that they think they have found something of significance down a side canyon.

"You need to go and investigate it" he says.

"Why us?" asks Anton

"Because Mrs. Ende said you are the "EXPERTS" responds Mike.

Mike describes to Riley where the entrance to the possible Ancients site is and we head on our way.

"Make sure its kept secret" he warns us as we leave.

We head back. About 1 km away from the crater, Emerse's instruments start working and then in another 500m or so both Scurry and Alpine come back to life.

We drive back up the main canyon until Riley points out the turnoff but before we turn Anton and Hoff spot several men at the top of the canyon watching us.

Scurry
Spanner orders Scurry to head up and see and in a few minutes Scurry reports back that there are four or five armed men watching.

"Montrose bastards" says Itzy.

"Let's kill them" says Liz

"We'd better go back and check with Mike" a sensible Spanner recommends.

We head back and see Mike who is surprised we have spotted his hidden guards.

"We have some more in the other canyon" says Mike

"Why didn't you tell us this?" asked Split

"You weren't meant to see them" responded Mike

"Ahhh, how do they know not to shoot us?" asked Emerse

"Because you are the EXPERTS" said Mike "and they know EXPERTS are coming today"

We head off shaking our heads at the obvious stupidly of Mike and his men. We get to the turning, and turn into a narrower and far more rock-bound canyon. The going is pretty rough in the pick-up truck and we are having second thoughts, when we come across a large cave to our left. The road of sorts continues.

"Let's investigate the cave" said Spanner

"No let's keep going" said Riley "we are running out of daylight and I don’t want to be here after dark."

We carry on for a time with the road narrowing and rocks more frequently blocking it. We decided to go no further by vehicle although Spanner, Liz, Split and Anton went by foot for another 15 minutes – finding nothing.

"Let's go back, get more equipment and that old tractor, rest up the night and come back tomorrow" suggested Riley and with that we head back, without incident to the Ende mansion.

We gather supplies including the old 1955 Harry Fergusson TE20 tractor and trailer, get the doctor to attend to our injuries again (now on full) and the next day head back to the second "quarry".

Emerse continues to be worried about the functionality of our technology and in particular his Tamagotchi. In an attempt to overcome this, he has created a faraday cage. We shall see…..

We head up the second canyon, past the cave, until the pick-up can go no further. We continue on the tractor until it also proves to be too challenging.

"What now?" asks Riley

"We go foot" says Spanner "but we can't leave the pick-up here unguarded"

"Let's put it in the cave" suggests Liz.

We head back to the cave and quickly investigate it to Spanner's satisfaction. The pick-up will fit in the entrance but the cave goes deeper. Booted footprints could be seen.

"Those will be Mike's guys" says Spanner in a huge leap of logic

We all seem to accept that without question, park the pick-up in the cave and head off back up the track.
Emerse's faraday cage
The track narrows and Emerse notices the electronics stop functioning. He places one of his many electronic devices in his home-made faraday cage - a canary cage - and low and behold it works. Emerse opens the door of the cage to stroke Alpine but it limp again. But recovers when the door is closed and the cage is intact.

The path continues to narrow and we get to an area blocked by rocks. After much effort we clear a narrow tunnel that we squeeze through and come to another half-sphere crater, also 500m in size, but this one is half full of water, up to the level of the fissure.

Initial observations are that the water seems to flow out this fissure from time to time at some volume. We assume this is during heavy rainfall.

Inside the crater, the sky appears black, with stars, like you're in space - but you can breathe fine. But back down the tunnel in the valley the sky is normal blue with clouds.

"The Ancients" says Hoff in some awe.

"Let's use our two canoes (that we fortuitously brought along [ super luck roll ]) and go out on the water" volunteers Spanner.

"Ahh do you think that’s wise?" questions Emerse.

"Sure, it is – who's coming?" responds Spanner

And sure enough Liz and Spanner head out on the water – briefly. The sun is far more intense with this black sky and they feel the warmth of radiation permeating their skin. They wisely choose to only stay a few minutes on the water.

They come to shore and as its nearing nightfall we head back to the cave where in another leap of logic we have decided its safe to spend the night.

As we approach we notice the bonnet of the pick-up truck is up. Drawing sidearms we slowly approach the cave and see nothing but do notice fresh booted footprints.

We go into the cave and can hear footsteps going away from us in the distance. Riley, Liz, Spanner, Anton and Split pursue. After a short time, we hear a KAR-THUMP deep down the tunnel. We edge forward and see three stunned men crouched facing away from us.

"Coo wee" calls Spanner for the 10th time.

"For Christ's sake shut up" growls Riley as they turn and we approach.

"Who are you?" asks Spanner

"We work for Mike" one replies

"Why did you run away from us?" questions Riley

"Because we got told to watch you and not engage with you"

"Why did you leave the bonnet open?" asked Riley

"Oops that was a mistake"

"What was that Karthump earlier?"
Poor Fritz

"Ahh – Fritz Hahnrei was going up the tunnel and... just exploded"

We look around the tunnel ahead (not too close!) and can see what looks like a pasty jam like substance all over the walls and dripping from the roof – no bone – no limbs just a pasty bloody mess.

"I'm not going down here" says Split.

"But it heads toward the Ancients site" says Spanner checking his compass.

Will the party go down?
Will Emerse stop stroking his Tamagotchi?
Will Hoff ever date a girl?
Will Spanner stop yelling out coo wee?
Will Split stop playing polkas on her piano-accordion?

To be seen next week.

 by Jeff

The above crew were summoned into the large family boardroom by Contessa Ende - Belle, Itzy, Hoff, and Penny's mum. Everyone had been staying for the weekend at the Ende mansion in Ravens End for the Ende family cocktail party to celebrate Contessa's successful "de-aging" treatment. Dressed as a nurse, she now had the body of a 16-year-old with plenty of curves in all the right places.

And as Itzy had noted at the party last night, "Money vell spent!"

Contessa was dressed as a schoolgirl

This morning, Contessa was dressed in a schoolgirl outfit as she strutted into the boardroom.

"Ve av vound Ye Faerie Queene" she announced, "And vou shall retrieve er!"

Belle, who had been taken sick with the dreaded Marmalade affliction, was looking to increase her influence within the Ende family, and Contessa had promised to give her some meaningful assignments. Ye Faerie Queene was an old Ende family scout-class starship, one hundred tonnes, fully equipped with two SABRE engines and a Jump-1 drive, that had been stolen from the family docks some month ago while awaiting deconstruction and component recycling. Everyone had suspected the rival Montrose family, but there had been no sign of the Queene since she had been taken.

"Da Montrose scum av da Queene at their outer estates" Contessa revealed, "So go get er back"
"Can't the Militia do that?" suggested Emerse.
"NO SOLDIERS!" yelled Contessa.
"Vou arn't from ere, so I vill forgive you dis once. Know dat dis is personal!"
"Hard to take her seriously ... dressed like that," muttered Emerse to himself.

The Montrose estates were about ten klicks out from Ravens End, so we were provided with an old farm van that we all squeezed into. Equipped with a looking-glass and Spanner's droid Scurry, we jumped into the van.

"Can anyone else drive?" asked Riley, as he leapt in behind the wheel.

The countryside was quite flat around Ravens End, predominately farming lands, and we blended in well as we puttered down the dirt road towards the Montrose place. Riley drove.

"Pull up about 500m from the estate" suggested Spanner, "Scurry's range is only one klick"

Riley pulled the van off the side of the road and got out the spare wheel.
"What?" asked Riley, "It's an excuse to be parked up here"

"Scurry, go get a good look at the Montrose estate," instructed Spanner.
"Is that what you want?" the droid asked.
"But don't get spotted," added Spanner.
"Yes mother," the droid replied before it shot off down the road, wings buzzing quietly.
"Did that just answer you?" asked Hoff, "How did you manage that?"
"I could make one like that," boasted Emerse.

We watched Scurry's progress on Spanner's hand-held monitor as she travelled up the road towards the Montrose estate. The estate was at the end of the road, so it was a good thing we hadn't decided to drive past for our recce. That would have been quite suspicious!

Scurry passed over a gatehouse about 50m in front of the estate compound, which was enclosed within a high chain link fence. A couple of guards could be seen in the gatehouse building, and a couple wandering about inside the compound. There were a few small houses scattered around outside the compound, and most interestingly, a large camouflage tarpaulin was draped over something at the rear of the compound, inside the fence line.

"That'll be the Faerie Queene" noted Spanner, "Under that tarpaulin at the back"

Once Scurry had returned, we packed up and returned to town to await nightfall. Both suns would be down tonight, so it would be nice and dark for the "recovery".

"And" stated Anton, "I can see in the dark just fine"
"I've got a sweet set of low-light goggles" added Emerse, "Made them myself"
"Mum will have a set in the stores too" noted Itzy.

The Montrose compound
Equipped with Emerse's low-light goggles, the Ende family night-vision goggles, wire cutters, and some weapons, we returned down the Montrose road around midnight. Switching off the headlights about two klicks from the compound, Riley, wearing the low-light goggles, drove us up to within 500m of the gatehouse, and pulled off the road. The gatehouse was fully lit, and a couple of the other buildings also twinkled with lights.

Anton, Liz (wearing the low-light goggles), and Split (wearing the night-vision goggles) crept off into the darkness to circle left around towards the rear of the compound and get a closer look at the fence.

Keeping low, they skirted round the gatehouse lights, past the lit house to the left, and approached the fence near the rear of the compound. A large ship glittered faintly from below the tarpaulins at the rear of the house. Two large, insulated storage tanks were located between the house and the ship, radiating coldness.

"That'll be the Faerie Queene" pointed out Anton, "And those look like liquid hydrogen fuel tanks"
"Good" whispered Liz, "Wait, that is good right?"
"What's that really hot thing on the fence there?" asked Split.
"Hmmm" grunted Anton, "That looks like an insulator, a malfunctioning insulator"
"Is that good?" whispered Liz.
"No" replied Anton, "That's bad. The whole fence is electrified. We better report back"

Anton, Liz, and Split retreated back around the lit building and the gatehouse to the van.

"The good news is that there is fuel" reported Anton, "But the bad news is that the fence is heavily electrified. There will be no cutting through that baby without some serious measures"
"Simple" suggested Emerse, "Just isolate a section of the fence before you cut it"
"Any suggestions on how you isolate a 10,000-volt chain-link fence?" sneered Anton.
"Throw one of those goats at it" suggested Split, "That'll short the fence and let you cut through"
"Yes, but that will also bring the guards" countered Anton.
"Then we just shoot them" declared Itzy, "A nice crossfire kill zone for those Montrose bastards"
"We should keep the killing to a minimum" instructed Hoff. "None, if possible"
"You should be able to get over the fence with a ladder and a decent insulating mat" suggested Hoff, "We have some appropriate mats back in town at the workshop"

Riley started up the van and we took a quick trip back to the city to gather some ladders and insulating mats from Hoff's workshop at the Ende family mansion. Within an hour we were back, parked off the road about 500m from the lit-up gatehouse. This time was the real thing, we were going in!

Riley, Spanner, Anton, and Itzy gathered up the gear, donned the googles and set off. (Spanner had to travel without vision, she just hung onto Anton's arm as he led the small group through the darkness to the fence)

Arriving at the electrified fence, Anton tossed the insulating mats over the top and Riley leaned the ladder up against the mat, and quickly climbed to the top. With a quick look around, Riley leapt from the top of the ladder and rolled to his feet, now inside the fenced compound. Spanner quickly followed him, landing lightly beside him and grabbing his arm as he led off towards the ship.

Anton recovered the ladder and pulled back to the van. Itzy backed off a way, found a comfortable spot, and set himself up in a prone firing position with his rifle covering the whole compound, front to rear.

Cautiously climbing the access ladder to the personal hatch, Riley activated the hatch mechanism.
The door panel hissed, clicked back slightly into the ship, and slid silently open.

"We're in" he quietly called down to Spanner, "I'll get the fuel lines and get the fueling underway"
"I'll give the ship systems a quick check" replied Spanner, "In case they, you know, booby trapped it"

The process required to start up the engines wasn't a quick one. First the fuel tanks needed to be filled, or at least partly filled, with the liquid hydrogen. Then the auxiliary jet engine needed to be fired up, to prime the SABRE's compressors before they could be ignited for flight. We had figured about a twenty-minute process if we short cut the fueling and didn't full the tanks completely.

No problem though, provided we were quiet and got the fueling done without alerting the guards. Itzy was out there to provide cover fire in case that plan didn't work out, and once we had the fueling done, we could seal ourselves in the ship and use the ship's armour plating to keep the inevitable bullets out.

Spanner gave the Queene's systems a once-over as Riley coupled up the fuel lines and started the electric fuel pumps. No visible issues with the Queene, and all running to plan! But, about ten minutes into the fuelling process, a shot rang out from the darkness. Startlingly loud in the quiet night, the boom echoed around for what seemed minutes. A bullet ricocheted off the roof of the house and a startled shout was quickly followed by the patter of footsteps from the side of the house as someone retreated back towards the front.

Itzy had spotted a guard exiting the front door of the house and heading round the side towards the back, where Riley was working on the fuelling process. Fortunately, the Montrose guard had gone around Itzy's side and been in his sight the whole time. Once it was obvious that the guard would have walked right into the middle of the fuelling, Itzy let off a round, just to scare the guard off and keep him away from the Queene.

Things were getting complicated now though, and there was at least five minutes of fuelling still required. Spanner leapt down to assist Riley with the fuelling process, standing by to decouple the lines, while Riley clambered into the Queene to prep the combustion engines and check the amount of fuel in the tanks. A few more shots rang out from Itzy's location, and a few return shots were loosed by the guards, blindly firing into the darkness in Itzy's direction.

After five minutes Riley called down to Spanner that sufficient fuel had been transferred. Spanner shut of the hydrogen valves, decoupled the lines, and quickly coiled them up and stored them back on the Queene. As Riley stated up the auxiliary engine with a roar, Spanner ripped down the tarpaulins, throwing them to the dirt, slipped in through the access hatch, and sealed it shut behind her.

Ye Faerie Queene
A few minutes to prime the SABRE's, and bullets started to ping off the Queene's hull. Lots of yelling and shouting from the compound as Spanner and Riley strapped themselves into the pilots' seats. As the twin SABRE's roared into life, the jet wash picked up the discarded tarpaulins and wrapped them around the few guards still taking shots at the Queene. They were thrown off their feet and tossed into the compound fence as the Queene slowly lifted off the ground and headed skyward.

"YEEHAW" yelled Riley, hands clasped firmly on the joystick controls.

Meanwhile, Itzy had retreated back to the van and was picked up by the rest of the crew. With Split nervously in the driver's seat, they cautiously made their way back towards town, where they were redirected to the Ende family docks. The docks were where the Queene had been stolen from, and where Riley was to return her to.

Running a full system diagnostic enroute, Riley and Spanner spotted an unusual software patch installed in the Queene's computer system. Activating a system quarantine protocol, Riley deactivated the patch for latter analysis and flew the Queene back to the Ende docks.

"Probably a tracking code" guessed Spanner.

Riley gently landed the Queene onto the waiting pad at the docks, and the crew were soon reunited.
Contessa appeared just after dawn with her retinue of guards and sycophants.

She set her computer experts to analyse the rouge software code, congratulated us on our slick operation, and told us that we were to stay here at the docks.

"I av some udder tasks for vou" she explained, "And vou can guard the Queene"

"Assuming they have tracked us here" suggested Spanner, "Let's take the Queene elsewhere"
"Ya, das goot" replied Contessa, "Ve have other facility at Bitter End. Dat's four thousand klicks away"

The Faerie Queene had four state rooms. The women (Liz, Spanner, Split, and Belle took one) and the men spread themselves into the other three. Some additional weapons (five rifles and a collection of handguns), including three extra grenades, and some general supplies were loaded into the 6-tonne cargo hold, and Riley plotted us a course for Bitter End.
